Auril, the Frostmaiden

Auril is the former goddess of winter and cold, embodying all the cruelest and deadliest aspects of these things. Her heart is as cold as the divine portfolio over which she rules, hidden beneath an outward beauty preserved in the frost she favors. While Auril is an admirer of aesthetic beauty, she is incapable of ever truly feeling love, honor, or other positive emotions. When she finds something beautiful that strikes her fancy, be it artwork or the artist themselves, she freezes them for preservation and locks them away to ensure she is the only one with the pleasure of viewing such treasures. Auril's cold apathy is made even more dangerous by her fickleness, which has proved deadly for many a mortal due to the sadism spawned by her lack of mercy or compassion. Many who have offended her, for even the slightest of reasons, have lost themselves in her blizzard, tortured with visions of warmth and home as her cold slowly takes them.
But it has been many millennia since any living mortal feared Auril. In ancient times, she came into conflict with Umberlee, Queen of the Depths. The sea goddess grew angry at Auril, for Auril's winters were freezing the chaotic tides of her oceans and locking them into pristine place. The dispute quickly became violent with Auril on the losing side; as a lesser deity, she could not stand before the power of an intermediate deity like Umberlee. Auril was forced to abandon her power over winter (which was acquired and henceforth administered by The Raven Queen) and flee to parts unknown, her name becoming a distant memory as the evil goddess felt a fire in her cold heart for the first time, a fire of vengeance.
