Campaign 04: Tales of Tavern Town
3 years after the Headhunters saved Lothal...
Tavern Town was a thriving community in a peaceful region. While not the official town name, everyone knew it as Tavern Town for the huge array of establishments on the south side where you could find virtually any alcoholic beverage that exists on Nexus. Every year, the Battle of the Bars competition became the talk of the town as the many barkeeps all attempted to make the best drink they could in the name of glory and not remembering the competition the next day.
One such entrant to this year's competition was Sindri the Brewmaster, whose plans were nearly ruined before they truly began due to two key factors. First, Sindri has inadvertantly snubbed an equal parts uptight and unpleasant man with many local connections, Amon T. Lado. Second, Sindri's tavern, the Fine Mend, was absolutely trashed in a bar fight when he stepped into the cellar to grab something. Unable to fix the bar & collect the ingredients he needed himself, he strong armed the winners of the fight (Vinnie Vice, Kaylin Tramaer, and All Smite) into collecting the ingredients before him while he repaired the bar.
And so, our (noble?) heroes began their journey. They traveled into the Underdark and captured cave fishers for their naturally alcoholic blood, assisted a summer camp of orcs with raiding the elf camp across the lake, burgled the Baker's Guild, proved their valor in the halls of Valhalla, and settled an estate dispute between two feuding siblings. But then they traveled to an old ruin, a flooded dwarven village within a cave, in search of rare berries. Inside they were ambushed by Noxidus, the Green Shadow Dragon. Though they fought valiantly against Noxidus and his undead, the dragon proved to be too much for the adventurers. Vinnie and All Smite were killed, their coin & magic items taken for the dragon's horde and their bodies devoured, while Kaylin Tramaer barely escaped with her life.
Despite lacking the final ingredient and sabotage attempts from Amon T. Lado, Sindri's brew won the Battle of the Bars and the entire town proceeded to get blackout drunk off the concoction. At which point, Sindri revealed his master plan by transforming into his true mind flayer self and releasing a horde of intellect devourers that slaughtered the helpless citizens of Tavern Town and stole their corpses as meat puppets. Sindri was congratulated on a job well done by his master, Rhith, the Illithilich. The pair left with their new army of "humanoid" spies in the night, no one noticing the disappearances until people began to come in from outside of town the following morning. What transpired in Tavern Town remained a mystery to the surrounding communities as Rhith's army grew.
