Molders are mushroom-like monsters with very little resembling personality or free will. They serve as the
Morlocks' main foot soldiers, being placed under their creator
Moltor's command. Crafted using a mix of stolen secrets and the
Gravestones power, Molders are an unholy mix of plant life and undeath. While not particularly effective as soldiers, being easily replaceable makes them excellent for zerg rush tactics and distractions. They come in two main varieties, standard soldiers and kamikazes that spread spores.
Development & Creation
One of
Moltor's chief duties in the
Cult of Orcus was eliminating cults worshipping rival demon lords. Where possible, he steals the secrets of those other groups and twists them for his own purposes. After wiping out a chapter of the Cult of
Zuggtmoy, Demon Queen of Fungi,
Moltor reworked magical research they were conducting to serve himself. This involved a fair amount of trial and error.
He started by creating normal mushrooms that could infect others. The first strain was left in the wild to be eaten by animals, which merely made the beasts grow much larger and much angrier. The second strain was made to release spores that infected living creatures; while this did convert the victims into Molders, the process too took long for
Moltor's liking.
A breakthrough came through with
Levira's assistance when they used souls she'd imprisoned in
Gravestones to simply grow the mushrooms into Molders directly instead of converting living creatures. While these Molders were not as strong as the transformed variety, they could be grown fast enough to make up the difference through sheer numbers. The
Morlocks had their foot soldiers, ready to back up the rest of their monsters as the frontline of their army.
