Shar, Mistress of the Night
Shar is the goddess of darkness, serving as the wicked parallel to her twin sister Selûne, the Moon Goddess. It was she who created the Shadowfell, the dark reflection of the Material Plane that shows the world of mortals at its darkest and dreariest. She is also credited with the creation of the Shadow Weave, an alternate source of arcane magic that can provide great power at the cost of one's sanity. All that lies in darkness is Shar's domain, both in a literal and metaphorical sense. While it is common knowledge that caves, tunnels, and even a moonless, starless night belong to Shar, not all realize that her influence also extends to loss, pain, and other dark emotions.
It is said that Shar is one of the eldest deities, brought into being upon the creation of the universe as an embodiment of the nothingness that came before. Returning the universe to this state of nothingness is her ultimate goal, for only then will her endless sense of hate and envy towards others for their audacity to exist finally cease. She is not one for mercy, planning for this process to be slow and painful for all those involved. Despite this, she often appears to prospective followers claiming she can heal their broken hearts. But Shar offers no true healing; only "healing" as defined by Shar herself. At best, she offers her worshippers numbness to free themselves from pain. That lingering pain, just beneath the numbness, serves only to feed Shar's own sadism.
Uncovering the Underdark Campaign
When the Delvers of Secrets entered the Shadowfell in search of Mother Moth's hiding place, they came to the Mistress of Night's attention. Particularly the gloom stalker ranger Jake F. Statefarm, whose magical abilities seemed to resonate with the shadows surrounding him. She sent her shadows to him, isolating the bugbear within his own hatred and the memories of his betrayer. She made him an offer of power, one that would allow him to use the blood of his betrayer as a salve for the wound upon his soul. Jake accepted without hesitation for the sake of his revenge and Shar connected him to the Shadow Weave.
