The River King
His Rippling Majesty, better known as the River King, and resembles a lean elf. This archfey rules from the Rippling Court at the heart of the Arvonesse Waterways in the Feywild. His power and influence extends into the realms beyond, including any of the rivers that tickle his fancy within the Material Plane. This is particularly true of the Moonflow River; every so often, someone will claim they saw the River King in the distance on the riverbanks starting captivatingly at the rivers glowing water. Others state that any of the mysterious vanishments that take place on the river's waters at night can be attributed to the River King "inviting" mortals to his court, often never to return.
The River King is a stern ruler with a great love for his people, both those who live in his domain and those who show respect towards his rivers. His fickle nature also hides a stern anger than can appear most quickly when anything threatens his domain. The River King's nature is as ever changing as a river, making dealing with him a perilous exercise at best. "A river may change its course when it wills" is a common saying in the Rippling Court, often referring to his Rippling Majesty forgetting a promise he previously made and his seeming change of heart.
Uncovering the Underdark Campaign
Welcome to Haven City Arc
The River King was somewhat perplexed when a mortal named K arrived at his palace's gates seeking an audience. He was accustomed to mortals only coming to visit when he insisted they accept his invitation. It had been a great many moons since one had shown up asking to be let in. Something about this particular mortal struck him as familiar as the River King realized this was the one his little brother Red had recently been talking about. The River King instructed his nereid guards to show the man inside and to the throne room. The River King greeted his guest heartily, wondering aloud whatever could have brought this mortal man here of his own volition. Though K correctly suspected the River King already knew something of his motives, he explained that he sought Captain Xavier's Lost Treasure treasure to help fund an expedition into the Underdark and was willing to be eternally indebted to the River King in exchange for its location. Luckily for the mortal, the River King was in a pleasant mood and declined to accept the offer. He said he couldn't accept a barter for something already in the possession of K's companions while also warning the bugbear against offering something so valuable for such a small reward in the future. K inquired whether the River King had any objection against his seeking to claim Captain Xavier's Lost Treasure, seeing as the River King was the one who had hid it away. He did not, but cautioned K that Captain Xavier's restless spirit was unlikely to let the treasure go easily. The River King then stated he had other guests to attend, but couldn't let K go without returning his kindness. The River King was aware K had spent the last few days cleaning trash from his beloved Moonflow River and feeding its fish, and would not let this debt go unpaid. For doing these two things for him, the River King would do two things for K. The first was showing him how to carry himself better and make the most of his natural abilities, granting K the ability to strike fear into others with his Unsettling Presence. However, the River King did not mention that this ability ███████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████. The River King also advised K to take a specific route on his way home, stating he would find someone who'd like to see him if he did. K took this advice and as a result wound up engaged to Sonya Snowborne not long after. When the River King learned of this, he hoped he'd be invited to their eventual wedding. Such mortals affairs often proved interesting and became even more so by his mere presence.
