Nexus Mundi Deep secrets beneath a city-covered Earth.

3022

Created by

In a future far, far away, Earth has became the center of a galactic civilization, inhabited by over a trillion souls of humans and aliens. A once blue planet turned into a grey ecumenopolis - a massive world-size metropolis spanning most of the globe. Terrestrials call it home, but aliens know it better as "the Nexus of the Milky Way".

This terrestrial ecumenopolis is a space opera dream at its surface but quickly turns into a cyberpunk nightmare as one delves deeper. With so many souls to house and feed in a small planet, corporations and governments developed a system of juxtaposing layers of habitability. The wealthiest individuals live in perfect districts and magnanimous buildings in higher layers, close to sunlight. Working classes and the poorer are relegated to poorly lit lower layers, riddled with crime syndicates and corporate wars.

But miles deep into this artificial planetary crust, at its very base, lies "the Grave": the remains of terrestrial nature, ecosystems and cities of millennia ago. Relics of a distant past, often trapped in eternal darkness, inhabited by mutants and unknown life forms. Most who dare venture this underworld are never heard of again. Yet a few adventurers are drawn to it. Some look for riches but others are "called" on dreams, spiritual experiences, or daydream revelations.

Those who survive and come back from the Grave... change. They develop strange and powerful supernatural abilities, but their life becomes a lot more dangerous. Going to the Grave is a societal taboo, and if discovered corporate media persecute those people as mentally unstable “grave-diggers” and the Planetary Administration chases, imprisons and dissects them. Authorities and power brokers want to squash and contain abilities they cannot understand nor control.

Yet, such individuals often become leaders, activists and fighters against corporations, layer-states, law enforcement or governments. Whatever happened to them in the Grave changes their minds and outlook of the world, enough to risk their lives to advocate for societal change.

Nexus Mundi is designed as a scenario of a few key allegories and themes:

  1. <to-do>
  2. 2. Dehumanization of inequality: little vertical movement in the society creates a system of classes separated by floors much like a medieval fantasy dungeon with more and more dangerous subhuman humanoids level by level
