However, tragedy is no stranger to Masamune. At the age of fourteen he witnessed his father, the Shinken Green at the time, being slain by a troop of yo-kai who were terrorizing the countryside. With his father dead, the young and inexperienced Masamune was thrust into the role. On his very first mission as the new Shinken Green, Masamune encountered a powerful yokai with deadly aim. It shot his right eye, completely destroying it and teaching Masamune a very hard lesson. Since that day Masamune has only grown stronger, and earning the title of the "One-Eyed Dragon" due to his might and ferocity in battle.

During the attack on Honnojii, Masamune had his remaining left eye sliced out, leaving him completely blinded.
