Ruins of Sleekshore

Out in the wilds, an old elven city sits in ruins. Most visitors to the place are Historical Society students from Strixhaven and curious tourists. It's rare to see a Nexian hanging around.

Purpose / Function

Some would argue that historical significance is significance enough, but many Nexians care mostly about the education value and tourism revenue.

Architecture

The mile-long city is filled with broken walls and empty foundation, but there a few noteworthy sites, documented by placards and pointed out to everyone visiting for the first time.   Bathhouse - Dirty, empty pools, fossilized towels, and even the occasional elven body are all strewn about in the dilapidated hall. There's no telling what exactly went on in here, but given the strange state of the things found inside, perhaps it's better that way.   Townhall - Sleekshore is entirely built around this structure, leading many to believe it was very important to the elves. The most common theory is that it was either the quarters of the empire's ruler or a gathering place for events and announcements. Those who first excavated and named the structures believed the latter, hence its name. However, recent artifact findings have called this assumption into question.   Arena - The ancient elves had a love of gladiatorial combat akin to many other societies of the era. The large coliseum on the edge of town is smaller than most discovered within other ruins, but is unique in that there is a large network of rooms and corridors underneath it. It seems that those who fought in the arena also lived underneath it, possibly for free in exchange for their performances. There are a number of animal stalls and cages down there as well, meaning that animal duels may have been a common occurrence.   Educational Hall - A building that appears to be a schoolhouse can be found in Sleekshore, located on the far end of town so that the children of farmers could attend as easily as city-dwellers. This is the richest source of artifacts aside from inside private homes, as many educational tomes and teaching tools were left behind after the school's closure. The notebook of one Thomas Tealeaf, a student in the third grade, is a prized treasure, documenting a typical life within the elven empire from the perspective of a child. There is an ongoing search for the boy's ancestors to this day, and if they are ever found, the book will be turned over to them and re-documented as their property.

Defenses

The city was once guarded by massive cannons and archer-filled towers, but those days are long passed. Even with no one within it, however, Sleekshore is still dangerous. When it was first discovered, it was filled with traps and precarious paths, but since then, it has become much safer. Still, curious explorers should be careful, lest they lose a finger touching something someone wanted to protect.

History

Many ruins lay in World's Edge, but few are as intact and explored as Sleekshore. It was once the stronghold of a burgeoning Elven empire, but conflicting political ideals and economic collapse from within caused the society to fracture. Like so many Nexians, the elves of the empire went their separate ways and eventually, all of them left for other dimensions, leaving the city to decay.

Tourism

Today, the ruins are primarily visited by Strixhaven explorers or plane-walking tourists. Most artifacts have been excavated and sit in places of honor around town, but a few are still left and the buildings themselves are worthy of inspection themselves. Often younger or less experienced ruin-explorers are brought here by their teachers, as the traps and dangers within the city have all been triggered. This is easily the least dangerous ruin in World's Edge, but the dangers of crumbling architecture and the craftiness of long-dead elves should never be underestimated.
