Atlinthaian Monarch

The Atlinthaian monarch is both one of the Atlinthaian National Council members and chosen by the council. Therefore, they are always a member of the nine ruling families of Atlinthaia. Traditionally, the monarch was always a queen, though they can now be either male or female.

Though are they are considered the ruler of Atlinthaia, the monarch has limited power in running the country. Their most important duty is to serve as the primariy diplomat to other nations. Laws, however, cannot generally be made without the approval of the full council, though the council can temporarily grant the monarch greater power in times of crisis. Most famously, this happened during the Southern Conflict. The monarch may also summon the council to a special session, though only a full council vote can end such a session.

Because the monarch is selected by the council, the position is not inherited, as with other monarchs. Though the monarch serves for their lifetime, when they die, the council re-convenes to select a new monarch, which may or may not be a member of the previous monarch's family. The monarch can also be removed from their position by a unanimous vote of the other eight members of the council, and can be executed if they refuse to comply with the ruling. Most monarchs elect to retire from the position in their old age.
