Bella
As seen in
Bella is the Calistian god of dreams. She has dominion over dreams and nightmares, sleep states, and parts of prophecy and creation. Most often described in female form, she is usually depicted as having very pale skin, dark hair, and ice blue eyes. As the god of dreams, she is also the god of nightmares, and she is frequently said to show this quality first and foremost. She is said among members of the Suracity religion to have such a terrifying appearance she has been known to scare people to death. Bella is said to be the younger sister of Flit and the older sister of Faith.
Calistian Home
Bella's home in the Calistian realm is depicted as a mansion at the top of a hill. It is always nighttime there. Chained throughout the yard are nightmares and mortals who Bella transformed into monsters as punishment for breaking into her home. Their chains will allow the monsters to reach within inches of the path up to the house. Similar, the porch has nightmares chained to it that cannot quite reach the door.
The inside of Bella's home is as bright as the outside is dark. Each room is dedicated to a different type of craft--glasswork, tapestries, paintings, etc. Each craft is a different dream, and they tend to be very colorful. All of the windows in the mansion are stained glass, and from the inside, they shine as if the sun is perfectly angling through them.
Popular Stories
One of the most popular stories about Bella is that of the Dream Eater. In this story, Bella transforms into a snake in order to eat nightmares that have escaped from her home in Caliste. In some versions, Bella loses control and continues to eat all dreams, good and bad, until she also consumes her sister. In other variations, she traps those who let the nightmares lose and turns them into the monsters chained outside her home. This story was the inspiration for naming the Dream Eater snake.
In another story, Bella blessed one of her followers with the gift of prophecy through dreams. The mortal used this gift to heal the sick, achieving fame and fortune. One year, a plague spread throughout the land, and the dreams of prophecy pointed to a long lost artifact as the only cure. As adventurers tried and failed to return with the artifact and people continued to die, the king blamed Bella's follower for the plague and sentenced them to die. That night, Bella sent a dream convincing the king to kill himself instead. Some versions of this story also say the king was also discovered to be hoarding the artifact of healing during the plague.
