Gloria never knew that Kelani was named after the founder of Linakra's greatest wizard rebellion.
She never knew that Kelani actually had a gift for languages, or that she was even known to have conversations with animals.
She didn't know that every slip of the tongue, all those faltering sentences and mispoken words, were Kelani's secret language.
She never knew why she loved daffodils or why her favorite color was blue or why she sewed bird patches all over her clothing.
Gloria never knew Kelani had never been a friend. That all those meetings under the grotesque on the old temple were falsely engineered. Or that Kelani used them to garner information.
She never knew that the grotesque was Kelani's nod to the way Gloria had spoken of mages on the day they met.
Gloria never knew that she was the enemy.
