Life & Expiration

A cloak from ~1000 A.D. was found in a submerged treasure chest. It was in near perfect condition. After some study, it was originally determined to be the Cloak of Sharaf the Great. The colors matched, and the chest was found in Izquierdan waters. But the warlord had been legendarily stabbed in the back, with the assassin's dagger tearing through the cloak. The cloak that had been found had a tiny hole that lined up with the supposed death blow, but wasn't nearly big enough. Theories range from the legend being over blown, to leviathan skin self-repairing in salt water, to it just being the wrong damn cloak.

Cultural Significance and Usage

As implied by its name, leviathan skin has to be peeled off the back of a leviathan. I don't need to go out of my way to tell you that this stupid dangerous. Anyone wearing a cape made from it is either obscenely rich, or obscenely badass. Naturally, the aristocrats of Elcadaver are never seen on open water without being covered head to toe in the leather.

Refinement

The secret of curing leviathan skin into it's wearable form has been passed from master to apprentice for at least fifteen hundred years. The bigger secret is how it's managed to remain secret. Blood magic is suspected, but bone magic hasn't been ruled out as a possibility.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

Leviathans aren't just bags of skin and hate. Bones, teeth, and horns are big enough, light enough, and tough enough to make formidable weapons with minimal modification. The meat is prized as much as the skin as a delicacy. The way the intestines spill across the waves is a known map to the future, provided you know how to read them.

Trade & Market

While a single leviathan can supply enough skin to make a hundred or so full body suits, leviathans are notorious for being attached to their skins. Killing these monsters is half a matter of luck. Should Fortuna smile upon you that day, the next question becomes transport. We hope your holds were empty. While ships properly equipped and large enough to mount "whaling" expeditions for the beasts are in production, they've yet to become a common sight. Leviathan skin sells for a premium.

Storage

Before being properly cured, the skin needs to be stored in saltwater or it will turn brittle. Afterwards, a monthly soaking with salt water should be sufficient.
