Elias Sevaski "Soundwave"

As a renowned newspaper we at the Golandon Inquisitive have a long history of reviews about the cultural exploits of fellow Golandians. Given the large popularity of the new opera, "The Dictator's War", we could of course not wait too long for our very own review.   As someone who has frequented the theatre quite often and someone who seen many musical masterpieces, I have only one thing to say. This is the best performance I have ever seen.   Not only did the perfomance itself knock me off my chair, the music itself actually knocked me off my chair as well! Elias Sevaski or "Soundwave" is a true genius! Only non Golandians would claim otherwise!
— Golandon Inquisitive Review

Elias Sevaski, who is currently also known as "Soundwave", is a famous musician and composer in Terios. Before the recent Covenant-Alliance War Elias had some renown but was not yet famous. This all changed when he created the opera "The Dictator's War". This piece is seen as one of the greatest of its time, which is partially also due to his guitar enhanced with Falls.

Personal Life

Early Life

Elias was born in the town of Savi, along the western border of Terios. His childhood was not the best but his family was not poor either. Elias' father was a carpenter and his mother used to teach at a local school.   During his childhood he already showed some musical talent and became the lead singer of the child choir in Savi. Not long after his father made him a very basic musical instrument which would help him develop his talent even further.   When Elias became older he decided to leave Savi behind and travel to the capital of Terios, Golandon. At first he performed in the various taverns of the city but eventually he was noticed by a member of the Bard College. There he trained among the best of the country to become a renowned musician. Soon he had quite a few great perfomances on his resume already. But then the war started.

Relationships

Elias had a good relationship with his family prior to the war. Sadly they all perished during the Sacking of Savi by the Magi Covenant armies. Their death was most likely a very defining factor for the creation of his most famous work.   In Golandon Elias has a large network of friends and he is even well accepted in high society. This is also partially because he is seen as somewhat of a war hero.   As far as relation go, people know that he had several long relations with women from the entertainment industry. There are, however, some rumors that during some of his many parties he does not care for the gender of his partners. Elias himself does not feel the need to confirm nor to deny these rumors.

Personality

Elias is a very friendly and charismatic person which makes him well loved by many. His sense of humor is appreciated by both his friends and the audience while watching his performances.   In general he is known to be a carefree person. But if anyone offends him, he can easily hold a grudge for quite some time. What many don't know, however, is that even though he puts up a happy facade, he is still tormented by his experiences during the war. Those that know him well believe that this is what fuels his creativity.

Personal History

Covenant-Alliance War

In the year 1237 AE the largest war in Farlian history would begin. What only started as what seemed to be a border dispute quickly escalated into an enormous conflict involving various alliances. The Elven and Human countries stood at opposing sides of the conlfict and would be involved in many bloody battles.   Elias did not want to participate in the war at first. But when he heard that the Elven armies conquered Eprus and were closing in on Terios he decided to help turn the tide and enlisted as a regular soldier. The army, however, arrived too late to prevent the Elves from crossing the border and Elias' hometown of Savi was sacked. The vast majority of its population, including his family, met their untimely end.   The Elves were pushed back eventually but Elias still wanted to make them pay and joined the troops that were getting ready to reclaim Eprus. His good friend, Andris, who was also a Savi native, joined him on this quest.   When both sides clashed one more near Old Asmeth in northern Eprus, Elias and Andris were there as well. During the battle Elias managed to get close to the leader of the Magi Covenant, the dictator Verakon Elervir. Since the Covenant army was losing Verakon took matters into his own hands and started a rampage deeper within the enemy's ranks than would be logical. He hoped that this would inspire his troops but it would actually become his downfall as he did not pay enough attention.   Elias sneaked up on Verakon and managed to lightly wound him but was quickly thrown back by the powerful caster. Were it not for Andris, Elias would have perished that day. When Verakon prepared a spell to obliterate Elias, Andris jumped between them. The explosion of the spell was so close to Verakon that both Andris and Verakon were killed by the blast. With that sacrifice the war ended.

Verakon Elervir by Kefkejaco with Heroforge
No matter how one is born we all die the same
The high, the low, regardless of one's fame
As the dictator was about to strike
he would prove that he is alike
Fiery tendrils from his hands

Burn Dictator Buuuurn!

The fire in his eyes expands

Burn Dictator Buuuurn!

His mind set to slay

Burn Dictator Buuuurn!

But then our hero stands in his way

Burn Dictator Buuuurn!

Fire engulfing
Burn Burn Burn Buuuurn
To ashes you shall retuuurn!

The Dictator's War

After the war Elias became famous for helping to end the war and many people were keen to hear the story of the events that transpired. Elias saw it as his obligation to tell the story of the war as a tribute to the families and friends that lost their lives during the war.   Of course he wanted to do this in a way that he knew best, through music. What he created would become known as perhaps the best opera to ever be created in Terios. Even now it is quite difficult to get a ticket for the perfomance. The Thokaides Theatre in Golandon is filled to the brim many times per week with people dying to see the opera "The Dictator's War".   Many describe it as a truly touching experience. But not only the emotional aspect of the play is to be appreciated as the performance itself, and especially that of Elias, is on a fantastically high level. His music is enhanced by magic to such a degree that leaving the theatre without being stunned by what you saw is impossible. Visitors are treated to spectacles involving illusion, fire and air magic.   Although he has written the story of the opera he has not composed every piece all by himself. In this regard he was aided by his friend Tasaria Elisis. She is a great artist herself and is glad to be part of the piece even though Elias tends to steal the show. During the opera itself she is the conductor for the orchestra while Elias performs together with the other singers.

Soundwave

Soundwave is the new nickname of Elias Sevaski but it actually refers to the guitar that he uses. This guitar is one of a kind as it has been enhanced with Falls. After the death of Verakon Elias manged to get these crystals from the remains of Verakon's armor. He then used them to make his own magical instrument, Soundwave.   The full range of abilities of this instrument is unknown but those who have watched the performance tell about a few things they saw. It seems like the instrument is able to create illusionary displays of light nearby. Some even belief that the instrument is able to directly affect one's mood.   The most famous ability, however, is the one that is used during the final battle scene of the opera. At the moment of Verakon's death, Elias uses his guitar to create a thunderous sound that almost knock people from their seats in the theatre. This is also the reason why no drinks or food are allowed during the perfomance.   Due to the various abilities of the instrument people assume that Soundwave has Mind, Cloud and Ember crystals embedded. This assumption is mainly based on the fact that Elias is not known to be a strong caster himself and would otherwise not be able to have the abilities he currently has on stage.

Influence

The governments of Terios and of other Human countries are quite fond of the opera seeing it as a heroic tale of how they won the war. Thanks to this he has become well accepted in the high society of Golandon and he is one of the few non-Golandians freely allowed in the Periga district.   The piece has, however, also found its way into the hearts of bad groups. Especially the anti-Elves organisations are fond of the opera and project their own ideologies on it.

Great work with this! He seems like a very compelling character; I can feel his personality radiate from the article! I really enjoyed reading about his history, and I think it's very creative of him to write such a grandiose opera to honour all the innocent lives lost at the hands of the enemy by re-enacting the final battle. I'm curious to see it now too!

Jan 22, 2022 12:37

Thanks you so much! ^^ The war is really something still close to people's hearts and it gave the performance even more popularity. In my mind it is quite the sight to behold :)

Great article and that is one radical guitar! There's just a few things that aren't clear to me. In your world, it sounds like you have to consume a large amount of falls to become a caster, or have the natural ability. Is Elias a competent caster himself, did he have to consume a large amount of falls, or is the ability only from the crystal in the instrument? Also, what kind of crystal is in the guitar? I'm assuming a cloud or divine crystal based on the description, but if it's a mind crystal, no wonder why his performances are so popular!

Jan 20, 2022 11:29

Thank you! ^^ Yes they do need various types of falls to become a full caster since a fall only gives access to one type of magic. Using more Falls of the same type are needed to eventually become a stronger caster. In the case of Elias he is not a particulary strong caster and only originally only had access to basic mind magic.   However from the remains of Verakon he managed to indeed get some more for the instrument. Inside it there are now actually a Mind, Cloud and Ember Crystal. So the instrument really enhances his original abilities and without it he would not be able to do the things he does now.

Very nice article :D I love the idea of using Falls for the instruments!   I have a few comments to help your refine some points:   "Not long after his father made him a musical instrument" What instrument? :p and what quality was it given that I presume is father didn't make a habit of making instruments?   "There he trained among the best of the country to became a renowned musician." I'm curious what difficulties he had to get into that training as an unknown boy from the countryside. Did he have to pass entrance exam or show off his skills first? Did he have to make contacts?   "he decided to help turn the tide" By that point, I'm wondering what martial skills he has. Or if he is just going to enrol as a basic soldier, pick up a sword and do whatever he can.   "When Verakon prepared a spell to obliterate Elias, Andris put himself between them. Both Andris and Verakon were killed by the blast which ended the war." Did Andris do something to rebound the spell? I'm not understanding how Verakon managed to off himself somehow here :p And the way Elias and Andris have been presented, they're just two normal guys with no specific martial talents, so I wouldn't expect them to be able to do much against him.   Random thought, but I'm curious about the government's reaction to the opera and its content. and also what they think about Elias using Falls in his guitar.   And also, you don't really mention an orchestra, so it seems that Elias composed the opera, plays the guitar and sings all on his own? IF that's the case, I think it's worth remarking upon it since it's contrary to what comes to mind at the word opera.

Jan 20, 2022 21:48

Well the first instrument was kind of shitty but it helped to train a bit nonetheless. Indeed a good point to wonder how he got in that academy, it was actually thanks to being discovered by a member of the academy.   By turn the tide I mean he really was just a random soldier in the war actually but he was so angry about the death of this family that he just enrolled.   Indeed they were actually just two random guys. :p note of course is that Verakon was already pretty tired from the battle and already quite distressed by the fact that they were losing the battle. So when Elias managed to do a very superficial hit he got angry and did not pay much attention to the others. So he did not see Andris jumping in front of him just as he released the explosive spell which was way to close to him as well because of it.   The government is actually quite fond of it but on a less positive note it is also quite popular among anti-elf political groups.   Elias did actually help compose but his main function is the guitar and singing. But most people come for him anyway as he is the star :p

Elias seems like a nuanced character with a lot to bring into a story or campaign. I wonder if he ever broods about Andris' sacrifice and the life he is able to lead now (like survivor's guilt).

Lovely article with beautiful layout. I really like the contrast between the tragic backstory with war, dead family and friend, and the present day rockstar vibe the article gives of him. It makes me think that there is actually pain and sorrow behind the sparkly outside of the performer. Oh, and the notion of people dying to see the opera made me thought of people literally fighting for death to get the seats, which somehow was funny even though it should not be.

Feb 1, 2022 16:22

Thank you :) Yes there is indeed a large amount of pain that he still feels due to everything he experienced during the war. Yeah it is indeed insanely popular and people are not fighting yet but who knows when it would be the last shows :p

Alas, poor Elias, having a rather nice start to being a musician in his early days (so lovely to have a supportive family!) but then losing so much when his village was attacked D: RIP his family :( It's a heartbreaking yet powerful origin for the character! I like how you twist the knife by having Verakon die to save him, too. No relief for Elias!   It's a great article and story of how Elias came to be who he is. I actually really liked how his nickname is actually something referring to his instrument -- it was a neat twist, after introducing the nickname in the intro quote!

Feb 10, 2022 15:32

Indeed before he really had a happy life and then the war came and changed everything! Yeah he still feels guilty about his friend, what if he did not try to go straight to the enemy perhaps the sacrifice would not have been needed. Yeah I wanted to link his nickname to his intstrument since it is so important for his perfomances. They are very closely tied together :)

Hi! That was a great article, pretty full of information. I really like your CSS style, and the HeroForge minis you made fit well with the article! I'd like to note that your "block" text element seem to change a bit when hovered on: two angles switch from being pointy to being flat. I don't know if that's volontary or not.   If I could make a suggestion, perhaps you can add some hover text associated to the articles that you linked? Something to quickly sum up what the linked things are without needing to click to a new article.   Save from that, congrats on this neat entry!

Well, It was a pleasure reading another of your articles kefke.   I must say in my head Burn, Dictator Burn sounds.... a bit familiar. The "no food or drinks" in the theater is a nice touch :) I like the lyrics as well. It sounds like the opera is a star-maker, and not just for Elias. I can well imagine performers vying to be part of the show, because the popularity would rub off on them.

The article is exceptionally clear in its writing and formatting, and a pleasure to read. The review makes for a great start, and the rest does not disappoint. Given Elias' personal connection to the war, I do wonder how unbiased his opera is, though apparently the elves seem to have taken a liking to it as well. One thing I am wondering is how was he able to get close to Verakon as an enlisted soldier. Did he disobey orders or was it a whim of fate?

If you have some time, I would much appreciate your feedback on my entry for Adventure April: Carbon Copy Paradise

Thank you! ^^ His view is of course biased to a degree, although he does not hate all Elves such as some people do, he is still very opposed to the Elven governments and believes they have not done enough to compensate for the loss of life after the war. The Elves themselves don't like the opera at all, although Half-Elves do, but most Half-Elves are more fond of Humans.   Well he managed to get close by sheer luck actually. As mentioned Verakon was losing the battle and became very careless, believing to be beyond dying and got very deep in enemy ranks. So by being lucky that Verakon was busy killing other people Elias managed to get close.

I really love that he created an opera from his experiences during the war. I bet that is an intense watch. I like the idea that a literal soundwave hits the audience during the climax. :D   He seems like quite a complex and multilayered character too. Really well done. :)

Thank you! :D Yes it is certainly intense to watch and some people have problems with keeping their tears inside. Yeah I thought it would be quite fun to be almost blasted from your chair by the opera :p   He certainly has some deeper feelings that not everybody is observant enough to see :)

Thanks for the great article - even though Soundwave first made me think of the Transformer.   I feel sorry for Elias that his family was killed in Savi, but of course this is a strong motivation to take revenge after only wanting to help before, and it thus carries the rest of the story.   Is Andris then actually the hero of the opera? And how does he portray his role in the opera (and was he allowed to use the Falls or is it only tolerated because he was so involved in the dictator's death)?   Otherwise, the article is well constructed and you can really see that you have put some time into it. At least that's how it looks.

Thank you for the kind words! Yes Andris is actually the hero in the opera and played by someone else. Elias himself is very hard set on not claiming that he killed Verakon.   As for the falls since he was involved in killing Verakon he was allowed to have 'the spoils of war' but he wanted the Falls. Which are not difficult to get for the rich people but for someone of his standing it would not have been easy otherwise to procure them.

Ah. So the Falls were some kind of win-win in this case. Nice (the higher-ups can exhibit his other armour, etc. and he has got the "gems"). For the opera: Very nice, I like that. Thank you for the answers ^^.

Wonderful bard and I love it how his personal experience and grudge against the dictator inspired him to write one of the most famous pieces.   The story of a weaker soldier attacking a powerful mage then being saved by his friend sounds very much like Silmarillion fight between Morgoth and Fingolfin. Was that an inspiration?   Just curious... is Elias's guitar an instrument only he can play or is it something that could/will be passed down?

Thank you for the kind words :) Well the weaker soldier killing a much more powerful person was actually not inspired by it because even though I have read the Silmarillion I have forgotten all about it xp   Elias's guitar can actually be played by other so some of the abilties he shows on stage could be copied by others that way.

I love this character, and the way he uses magic to enhance his opera (I was just telling someone yesterday that I love theater special effects--these are quite the special effects!) I have to ask... were the lyrics at all inspired by "Burn, Butcher, Burn" from the Witcher TV series? Or is the similarity coincidental?

Thank you! Yes indeed it was very much inspired by that song and it seemed quite fitting as the dictator did in fact burn up :p
