Woodharbor
Government
A frontier settlement under direct governorship of Vindomora, the village's citizens are given a stipend of 200 silver pieces per year to live and work there.
The village is under the direct leadership of the governor, Lady Brannia Dolmuna Neslinian.
Defences
The guardhouse is equipped with several stores of spare weapons, as well as a jail.
Watchtowers are made primarily of wood and stone, with a brazier at the top for lighting signal fires in case of an attack. The largest watchtower on the edge of town contains a large, brass bell for warning the townspeople and urging them to safety.
There are no walls around the town.
Industry & Trade
Most townsfolk who are desperate enough to take up permanent residence are lumberers, and work in the various lumberyards in the Greatwood. Lumber is the largest export in Woodharbor, owing to its name.
The lumber from these lumberyards go to the sawmill, which are then packed onto wood barges and sent along the river to the next town.
Infrastructure
Several wooden houses are clustered together around a central marketplace. The roads are mostly dirt or gravel, with trenches dug off to the side for water and waste runoff; there are a few wells for putting out fires or gathering water, though most people prefer to go to the nearby river.
On the river just outside of town is a dock and warehouse for boats loading and unloading cargo and people.
There are several lumber camps just inside the Greatwood, a large and ancient forest said to be cursed, and the edge of town is protected by a few guard towers facing the forest.
There is a singular tavern near the dock, a law house, a stockade, a guardhouse, and a sawmill.
Assets
There is a general store in marketplace, as well as a combined blacksmith and armorsmith, a lumber yard, and a grain silo for storing ration grain in times of hardship.
Most town guards are equipped with medium armor, a crossbow, bolts, and a sword and shield.
Guilds and Factions
Lady Neslinian rules Woodharbor with a strong, but fair hand, and is well-respected by most townsfolk.
A small faction lead by the lumberer representative, Seg, would rather have one of their own made governor, despite the legal troubles that come with that -- namely that Seg is not nobleborn and likely will not be made noble by royal decree.
Most of the townsfolk are content to let Lady Neslinian and Seg fight it out, and not get involved.
History
Founded when King Lucius's late sister, Queen Hirtia Fadia Eumenius, created a frontier settlement program in an effort to encourage expansion beyond the Greatwood. The first settlement, Woodharbor was founded in 3892, a year before Queen Hirtia's death, and King Lucius has kept the promises made by his sister to the best of his ability.
The village was almost immediately met with problems.
Its close proximity to the Greatwood, first and foremost, made most settlers nervous, and many refused to stay there even when the frontier stipend was increased from 100 silver pieces to 200 silver pieces per annum.
The lumberyards, after their establishment, are constantly under threat of attack from creatures in the woods, and several lumberers have already disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Woodharbor's reputation for being a dangerous settlement has caused many merchants to steer clear of the place despite the lucrative potential profit in the lumber industry. This lack of trade outside of wood barges has caused the local economy to stagnate.
Architecture
Thanks to the lumber yards and close proximity to the Greatwood, most buildings are made of wood, and occasionally river clay molded into bricks. Houses and buildings in close proximity to the river might have high, shored foundations to avoid flooding.
Interiors are most often bare bones, two or three rooms with a central hearth and dining area.
A common, easily customized decoration is a mat made of dried river reeds, woven into various patterns, sometimes decorated with feathers, carved wood, or carved bone.
Geography
Mostly grass plains turned into farmland, with the exception of the river that runs along the eastern side of town and into the Greatwood.
Natural Resources
Lumber, grain, forest herbs and wild forage, pork, river fish, and occasionally duck.
