Basic Information

Anatomy

Avians are characterized by large, feathered wings sprouting from their backs. The wings, much like that of common birds, contain hollow bones, but are largely also fueled by Air magic. In addition to their wings, avians sport smaller groupings of feathers protruding from the sides of their faces, most often in front of their ears. The majority of avians are related to birds of prey, with a few exceptions, such as corvid or tropical avians.

Biological Traits

Nearly all of an avian's traits are based upon the bird that they are related to. For example, hawk-winged avians are incredibly strong and fast, built for speed and hunting, while corvid avians are typically very intelligent and sometimes even conniving.

Ecology and Habitats

Before the Shattering, avians generally gathered around places with strong winds or high elevation, such as the Latlan Mountains, for purpose of freedom to fly. However, after the entire continent gained a high elevation, avians began to disperse from the high-peaked mountains and settled around the world.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Despite fully being omnivores, avians have a strong preference to nuts and berries. This preference is so strong, in fact, that they have developed an evolutionary immunity to most plant-based poisons, such as that of nightshade.

Behaviour

Most avians hold order in a very high regard. Every variant across the world preferred to stay out of foreign matters, and kept a strong principle of neutrality with other species. On a personal level, avian people are usually described as more "refined" and reserved.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Particularly sharp sight is a characteristic shared across the avian species. They also have a slight ability to alter air currents without the use of active elemental channeling, assisting them in their flight.

Major Organizations

Perhaps the most well known avian-owned organization is the The Iritian Windrail , due to its popularity for travel. The train company was devised by a group of avian aeromancers that were tired of having to construct bridge after bridge, and makes its name as one of the first instances of global avian benevolence.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Avian masks in general are made to be very elegant, regardless of which ethnicity they originate from. They are meant to cover up the top half of one's face, and the shape nearly always has a beaklike protrusion where the nose area is. In terms of color, the masks are often made to match the wearer's plumage.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

As mentioned before, the avian nations tried to maintain heavy neutrality. In no situation would they willingly violate any laws or treaties of other nations and species. However, thanks to the Shattering, avians in recent times have been forced to form definitive alliances with other species in the interest of helping out with the floating situation.
