The Shattering was a cosmic event that swept across the entire world nine years ago, lifting the continents far into the sky and, well, shattering them, breaking each landmass into many smaller islands.
Resurgence of the Abyss
Previously, the modern people of Nocturn were unable to breach the world's lithospheric layers. Even the strongest terramancers were barely able to reach the mantle of the world. However, included with the effects of the intense elemental burnoff were the openings of various gateways across the continents. These abyssal gates revealed Nocturn's deep caverns, a massive expanse of underground caves that haven't been seen in over seven thousand years. Curiously, the abyss appears to be in a sort of pocket dimension, entirely unbroken despite the discontinuous terrain on the surface, allowing for intercontinental travel without actually crossing the continents.
Structural Anomalies
Strangely, the continents are not the only masses of land that now float in the sky. The ruins of ancient people that no longer roam the world have manifested in places between the central archipelagoes. These remnants provide evidence of past settlers, echoes of the world that have only been witnessed in Irite Jungle.
The Cause
The Shattering, as demonstrated by all its effects, was caused by a sudden explosion of elemental energy. This energy came from the Deity elementals, gods that were once honored daily, and eventually fell from power as time went on. However, the Astral Pantheon was not the direct cause of this elemental entropy. Their organization was thrown into chaos on the date of the Shattering, with the Constellations completely disappearing, and the Asterisms being grounded into their physical form without the majority of their elemental ability. When they were cast onto the world, like an atom being split, a great excess of their power was released into the world in an instant, shattering the land and causing the phenomena seen today.
