Luthstone Shield

The Luthstone Shield is an invention designed to create an arcane ward from a very small device. It was invented on the continent of Kyradon and remains as a key piece of personal defensive technology within the Slycol Desert as of 755 AR.

Appearance

The device is comprised of a small teal and purple crystal that is worn on the wrist of the bearer. This device when worn looks as if it is implanted in the user's wrist, almost as if it would cut off the arm should it be removed.   The device has a three strap design that is made of steel and lined with gold, almost like wires between the crystal and the rest of the design. The three straps seem to intertwine like a helix over the three of them.

Abilities

The strange design of the Luthstone Shield is aimed to protect people from physical and magical attacks that arrive from a range. Upon activating a command word, the crystal glows gently and produces a shimmering arcane ward around the wearer.   When surrounded by the ward, all incoming ranged attacks seemingly start to glance off of an individual, though the ward is not perfect, sometimes the odd projectile flows through it. The ward can only hold for up to one minute a day before its power source needs recharging.   The wearer of the shield can either take an hour helping channel small fragments of latent arcane energy into the device or they can intentionally use the energy to cast a spell into the device that fills the arcane technology with a charge.   If any form of dispelling magic is used on the device, it completely loses its charge and needs to be recharged using the methods outlined above. With significant enough dispelling magic, the device is discharged and unable to be used for the next several hours.

Known Wielders

Marlane Vor-Karis

Leader of the Thundersteel Skulker Band, Marlane has one of the first completed version of the Luthstone Shield and has different arcane users immediately charge the device as soon as it is expelled. As a result, several attempts on her life have failed from a distance, yet even melee attacks are prevented by the arcane spellcasters around her.

Sherad Vycloth

A war hero from the Ravenous War, they have used their Luthstone Shield to protect themselves from various assassination attempts and during the war as a protective measure. In recent years, the device has protected them as they have formed their own Skulker Band.

Urava Bor

A high-ranking member of the Tyvalin Concord, Urava Bor still uses a Luthstone Shield as it provides a level of comfort regarding possible assassination attempts. Her specific variant of the Luthstone Shield seems to be transparent to avoid detection by those around them. Urava has also found a way to sacrafice a small portion of blood to charge her Shield.

Quera Tona

An engineer for several Skulker Bands, Quera has found a way to develop the shield and keep it constantly powered using a strange arcane device strapped to their back. Using this technology has allowed them to stay protected when they were working for different Bands at the same time.

Seveldra Norvine

Seveldra is a healer who travels along the dunes of the Slycol Desert, they are known to find those who are at risk of dying and giving them enough strength to travel to the nearest settlement. Their Luthstone Shield is focused on protecting them from the projectiles of strange creatures that inhabit the dunes.

Lyla Everknorr

One of the few people outside of Kyradon who possesses a Luthstone Shield, Lyla live in the outskirts of the city of Malaton. The Eleston Keep is controlled by a strange draconic figure who has kept Lyla in their "employ" as an arcane consultant, she was gifted the Luthstone Shield by the creature as a protective measure and given a home among the Keep's shelter.

History

The first prototype of a Luthstone Shield was created sometime aroung 490 AR by a light elven inventor known as Tenerath Gorla. Tenerath was escaping from the recently destroyed Eavra with the device and used it to escape without being hit by many of the projectiles that were launched towards him by the invading creatures. He was able to travel with the device to the small town of Hluvara, where he passed due to several injuries that had pierced the shield.   Upon his death, the local Skulker Bands were able to remove the device from his arm and their engineer Forath Clarva was able to reproduce the technology and learned that the gemstones powering the device were able to be grown and cultivated within a month. Using all this knowledge, the second version of the Luthstone Shield was made and used by the Ryevale Skulker Band, who became reknown for its use. The technology would expand to different Skulker Bands and even powerful members of the Tyvalin Concord once the shield was stolen or taken from members of the Ryevale Band.   Around 650 AR, the technology became scarce as Luthstones stopped growing, instead wilting and dying over the course of the month. This limitation made for a short window at which the stones could be harvested and used in the Luthstone Shield. As a result, several of the shield's stones started dying and being unable to be used, leading to a shortage of working and stable Luthstone Shields, even in to the modern day.   Prominent generals during the Ravenous War would use a Luthstone Shield to protect themselves from some ranged attacks, though by this time, they were starting to fail as commonly as they would be useful. As a result, many people would abandon the technology for more effective, though quicker to fail spellcraft. As a result, very few people use a Luthstone Shield in the present day, but many of these people rely on them heavily

I love the idea of being able to carry an arcane shield like this discreetly on your person. Like, if you wore long sleeves no one would ever know. :D
