Session 9: Rookwood Report - A Grimoire, a lizardfolk champion, A druid and a difficult choice.
General Summary
The party made their way to Rookwood, a small necropolis west of Freeport. Many of the more wealthy families use the graveyard for the internment of their dead, and the Midwynters are no exception. When the group got there they found two men acting as guards saying the cemetery was closed. The party could sense something was off about them, and after asking them some questions, were sure these were no guard hired by the families of the dead that lay here.
They convinced the men leave and entered the cemetery to find that there were several Graverobbers plunders one of the tombs. unfortunately for the robbers of the dead, they picked the wrong tomb and instead of riches all they found was a pair of hungry Ghoul. The ghould made short work of them just as the party arrived. The group managed to slay the ghouls stopping them from doing any more harm.
They then proceeded to the Midwynter family crypt, and upon opening it, found that the crypt was being guarded by three Large Hellcats, summoned there specifically to stop Aurelia from seeking out the Grimoire they lie further in. They did not wish to desecrate the holy place where her ancestors lie with battle, so instead they found a way to pilfer the book through the ceiling while the the hellcats were distracted.
Book in hand, Aurelia found that the grimoire was more than just a book and contained some type of sentience. It told her that her family coven was just one of several that were part of a ancient group and that each one carried powerful blood. Every generation there was born one in which the power manifests itself and Aurelia was the chosen of this generation. It also explained that if she could gather all of the other chosen that there was a ritual that could be performed to unleash their true potential.
With this to think on, the party then made their way north to find Lorielie the Druid. The found on the road, a damaged Wagon with a cage in the rear. It belonged to a local showman who collects and displays exotic creatures in Freeport. From the looks of thing, the cart ran into a trap prepared for it, and whatever it was carrying was set free, killing the driver and horses.
As the party examined the area they found a wounded lizardfolk named Jah and her mate Rosk. They said they came upon the scene as the creature was finishing up with the driver and it turned its attention to them. Jah was able to slay the beast, a large hulking hound like creature, with her spear, but after a few moment it rose from the dead and wounded her. It than ran off. Rosk tended her wounds but she was in no shape to travel anywhere in a hurry. He was worried the beast might follow their scent to their village and begged the party for help.
The group agreed and followed the trail of the clumsy creature through the swamp. Sure enough it had led directly to the Lizardfolk Village and when they got there the beast had already killed several warriors. The group tracked it through the village and found several lizardfolk battling the creature. The creatures' wounds were healing as it had some regenerative power. The party helped in the battle using fire, knowing it usually stop regeneration and were to kill the beast permanently.
The lizardfolk celebrated them as heros and held a great feast for them. during the feast they were presented with a spear that was used by one of their greatest Champions, and named champions themselves. A Lizardfolk named Couladin, jealous of their attention, and racist of non lizardfolk objected but the shaman of the tribe sent him away and the rest of the celebration moved on.
The next day Rosk himself offered to guide them back to the road. During the trip though, the party was attacked by Couladin and several other Lizardfolk that followed him. The party fought back and slayed Couladin, and then convinced the other to stop, that they were going against their own tribe and would be exiled. They stopped the battle and returned to the village. Rosk, mortified at the attack, vowed to ensure they were punished for what they did, and guided the party to the road before making his way back back home, leaving them in friendship.
The party made their way north and were met by a great stag, who led them to Lorielie. Lorielie had been expecting them as she had known of Callum since he was a child and had track of him. She explained that she knew of The First Grove, and may be able to help Callum on his quest, but she needed to be sure Callum was of a like mind. She feels that civilization has slowly been killing the natural world of Nor. That mining, and lumberjacking and large farming is ridding the world of its natural places. She explained that the Druids were split on this. Younger Druid like Callum's father Lev, seemed to think the best way to protect these places is to gain influence in the settlements that do this and guide them to do it more responsibly. Older Druids have seen this before and it doesn't work. They need to fight back against those who are harming Nor. She asked Callum to support her side by taking on a mission. Breaking into a warehouse where a special herb is kept that stabilized gun powder. She want him to plant several bulbs in the warehouse which will neutralize the herb causing the guild that harvested it a log of Gold and showing them that reaping Nor for profit will not be tolerated. Callum agreed.
The party headed back to Freeport on what was an uneventful trip and spent a night in their own beds. the next morning however they were awaken by a summons from Inspector Pryor. He takes them to a house in Drak's end where there are several bodies all drained of blood. Each has the tattoo of the Children of the Black Rose. Also in the house was several drawings. Each one the face of one of the party members. The inspector questioned them for what seemed like ages about their involvement, and the party was honest. He finally let them leave with a warning, that this might mean they were being sought after by the cult.
The group left to return to their home to plan the warehouse breaking, but as they moved through Tent Town, they came across a cowled figure stepping into the road in front of them. He grabbed a large rock and picked it up as if it weighed nothing.
