Abyssal Emperor, Pontiff of the Obsidian Church

When Alexader Leonarhd ascended to the throne he carved out of the ruins of his father's world, he took upon himself a new title to shepherd the flock into a new age of righteous being. Upon his brow, he wore the crown of jagged and polished stone, around his shoulders, the mantle of the vision he witness, which gave way to the new order. Accompanying the garments was the title of High King and Pontiff of a new faith.

Qualifications

The title is bestowed upon the first born son of the Leo household, as decreed and made policy by the first Abyssal Emperor, Pontiff of the Obsidian Church, Alexander Leonarhd, when their predecessor is no longer fit, or able to carry the title. In this way, only one born of the current High King's blood may carry the title.

Responsibilities

As the Abyssal Emperor, it is their duty and privilege to rule over Nora and it's civilized peoples. From the seat of power in Prime City, on the coast, they have access to both land and sea and sky and may dictate decrees and declarations of power at their whim. It is expected that the High King attends regular courtly meetings and oversees the itineraries and agendas of his Small Council. In times of war, the High King may issue orders to the armies and lead troops as he sees fit, as well as aceept terms of surrender or seize resources as needed. As Pontiff of the Obsidian Church, he has the power to sway the opinion, direction, or doctrine of the faith in whatever way suits their pleasure. Much of the faith is based on the vision seen by the first Pontiff, who is now considered a saint by the faith.

History

History tells us that when Alexander Leonarhd, the son of House Leo journeyed into the Hiawatch Desert on a pilgrimage of self discovery, he was greeted by a vision one night while he slept. The vision was described that Leonarhd stood aloft, amidst a vast, starless abyss. Upon his back, he suddenly felt a great heat and turned to gaze upon a towering form, seemingly made of molten rock. Upon his back, he then felt a great chill. He turned to gaze upon another towering form, of pure chilling waters. As he looked upon the two divine figures, they suddenly flowed forth from each other and became one. Leonarhd gazed upon yet another towering form, this one made of pure Obsidian, the polished, jet black stone. From this form cascaded a multitude of stars and cosmos, almost as if the being was shaping them himself. Leonarhd awoke from this vision and took it as divine providence that such a great trio of beings were the ones who created the cosmos and had been denied praise and now demanded their due. With this in mind, he set forth, gathering allies and others who would witness to this vision and manifest it as their faith. This caused a great deal of contention with the ruling Zodiac monarchs, who had, with the absence of the Greater Demons, had considered themselves akin to deities. Son fought against father in the War of the Derelict King, and when the dust settled, Alexander and his allies had broken the old way and began to set about the new order. He was crowned and adorned with the mantle of his station shortly thereafter.

Cultural Significance

Nora had not, up until this point, had a widely recognized faith or rulership. The faith had been divided into small, pocket-like, cults that worshiped local gods or even the Greater Demons. Further, rule had been divided up by the Zodiac monarchs, who were scattered all over the world and held power in their own realms, absent interference, or input, from other monarchs.

The rank of the Abyssal Eperor, Pontiff of the Obsidian Church is the highest ranking member of both the church and state. Within the Abyssal Empire on Nora, he who carries the title has absolute power in all corners of the world that would recognize their rule. From them, they can make decrees that effect both the will of the the state, and other geopolitical entities, but also the will of the world-wide faith. There is no higher political or religious seat of power on Nora.
