Dwarves

Dwarves are shorter than humans (typically 4-5 feet tall), but much broader on average. Most live in underground dwarven kingdoms, usually in mountain ranges, though some are in what can only be described as tall hills.
Dwarves are reknowned for their skill in metal- and stone working, and are also accomplished miners. Dwarves found living with other races are usually working in forges, mines or quarries. If more than a few a families of dwarves are living in the same non-dwarven community, they usually form their own tight neighborhood.
Note: Although dwarven warriors are renowned for their skill with battle aces and war-hammers, these types of weapons are difficult use in tight underground passages. A more typical weapon in these environments is the dwarven short-sword. This weapon has a sword blade suitable for both thrusting and slashing, and the hilt extends from one side down to the pommel. This knuckle-guard not only protects the hand while the wielder is crawling along low tunnels, it is also handy for delivering powerful strikes if the blade cannot be effectively brought to bear.
