Norath is a world of magic and myth. The gods are real, and their powers are felt in the world. However, men, elves, and dwarves are the true forces of change. The gods have refrained from major, direct intervention in world since the "God Wars" thousands of years ago. During the God Wars, mortals prayed for their gods to fight for them on the battlefield, and the gods answered their worshipers' prayers. The resulting carnage and destruction horrified the gods, and they finally mutually agreed on rules limiting how much direct action they may take in the mortal realm. It has been roughly two thousand years (by the Shurrean calendar) since the God Wars were finally ended by "The Shattering" which almost destroyed the world. Much of the world is still wild lands and ruins, left over from the past, though civilizations are slowly rebuilding and reconnecting. This write-up centers around the lands and peoples surrounding the Inner and Solaran Seas. This "Known World" only encompasses about 1/4 of the total surface area of Norath, but it is all that they have actual firsthand knowledge of. Any realms beyond are the stuff of legends, or wild rumors from travelers who may (or may not) have ventured there.
