Ward Greycastle

Ward Greycastle

Ward Greycastle was born into a minor noble family deeply devoted to the teachings of Torm, the god of duty and loyalty. His parents instilled in him and his brother, Bastion, a strong sense of honor and righteousness. His father, Aegis, was a retired Tormtar Paladin turned blacksmith and his mother was a cleric’s aid at the nearby temple. Ward’s brother, then 16, was recently made a full Knight and inducted into the ranks of the Knights of Torm, a massive militaristic organization devoted to peacekeeping and defending the righteous. However, their peaceful life was shattered when a dispute arose between the Greycastle family and Duke Fentus Blackthorn, the local lord.   As tensions escalated, Bastion was given a dire order by the Knights of Torm—to execute his parents for breaking their oath of fealty to Duke Blackthorn. The truth, however, was that Blackthorn had failed to acquire their ancestral home, Greycastle, from which they drew their name through purchase, extortion or intimidation. Knowing that the Greycastle family was renowned for being warriors of great honor and determination, he had bribed the Knights’ leader, Gaius Dorne, instead to enforce a cruel punishment for the Greycastle’s refusal to pay the exorbitant taxes he had levied. Bound by his duty and allegiance to Torm, Bastion carried out the order, leaving Ward, a mere child of 9 years, filled with uncontrollable rage and grief.   Fueled by vengeance, Ward seized his father's old sword and marched to the Temple of Torm to confront the ones responsible for his family's betrayal. There, he encountered High Paladin Gaius Dorne and Duke Blackthorn in cordial conversation, sealing his fate with an impulsive charge. However, Bastion, torn between duty and fraternal love, intercepted Ward's attack and subdued him, their eyes locking in a silent exchange of pain and regret.   Realizing that his brother was prepared to kill him if necessary, Ward fled the town, forsaking his family's legacy and the teachings of Torm. He sought solace and purpose within the ranks of the Knights of Tempus, a decision driven by a newfound belief in the supremacy of power and self-determination.   During his training as an initiate of Tempus, Ward became an ardent admirer of the Red Knight, a heroine who became a demigod for her impeccable strategy and cunning in battle. This admiration prompted Ward to become a cleric, in hopes of leveraging the power of magic to turn the tides of battle. With unwavering determination, Ward embraced a philosophy that rejected blind duty and embraced strength as the true equalizer. Ward constantly struggles with his own morality, which also played into his subconscious interest in healing and defending the weak. He’s convinced himself that once someone has chosen to wield power over others, they have entered the arena of war and accepted that the stakes are literally life or death. He has a soft spot for those who are forced into war or victims of collateral damage or conscription.   Ward dreams of one day restoring the legacy of his family and recovering their ancestral home, but not in the name of duty—as a warning to those who would wield power over others to fulfill their desires and as a reminder that that which was bought with blood can be lost in blood. His journey as a cleric of Tempus became a relentless pursuit of redemption and justice, wielding his sword not just in the name of his fallen family but also as a testament to his newfound conviction that power, wielded with purpose, could reshape the world.

Knighted Cleric of Tempus, scholar of battle, harrier of the wicked. Power is a blade, dangerous enough in the hands of a novice, but most effective in the hands of one who respects its potential.
