The Novagate Construction

Everything was going smoothly until the fifth anniversary of the nation's formation when a group of "pirates" attempted to attack the under-construction Novagate. Fortunately, they were repelled with minimal damage. As the Novagate neared completion and testing, a system-wide transmission from a group known as the Plutarchian Syndicate was intercepted. The message warned that the human race would be destroyed by a monstrous pet of the far gods. Despite this warning, the Novagate was activated, and a massive beast emerged, attacking everything in its path. Although the fleets of Mars were ultimately able to defeat the creature, the construction of the Novagate was delayed by several months as a result.
