The Return

The Return is a tradition among Errantien Fae where after spending at least a quarter of a century on their own exploring the world, the returning Fae who survived that trial period are greeted by their batches and families by gathering everyone available in a large dorm room and letting the returnee rest. They sleep in a pile of bodies, get soft and warm foods such as soups and porridge brought to them multiple times a day and sometime spoon-fed, and piled on with soft blankets and other fabrics chosen to provide comfort.      The ritual is a reminder of the time when the Errantien Fae are coddled as babies, sleeping in dorms and being cared for by designated experts at childcare. The return to that time where life is simple is meant to represent starting anew among their clan as a fully grown and matured adult, no longer a child or juvenile who needs to be looked after. It is an acceptance of the returnee into the ranks of the adults in the clan, alongside all the benefits (and the expectations) that come alongside the citizenship status.    The entire tradition takes at least one month and can take up to one year without being considered abnormal, and if the returnee comes back with injuries or an illness, it can take even longer to let their physical body recover beyond the ritualistic cuddling.

Participants

The key roles that are required or at least expected are the returnee and at least one of their former caregivers. An appearance of biological parents, other caregivers from the same clan, batchmates from earlier times, injured members of the clan who are on bed-rest, younglings who want to join, and recent parents are not obligatory but a common sight, meaning that the dorm required for this tradition might range from being a small bedroom to turning entire palaces into large sleeping hubs, especially if multiple people return at the same time.
