The Quill of the Birdhens
During the Second Great War there was a man who stood out as a great leader of men and friend to all races. This was Rafael Monsalo, who marshalled many different peoples to fight the plague of evildoers coming from the west. He held the peaks for over a decade and orchestrated the controlled retreat to the flatlands.
One of the peoples Monsalo defended were the Birdhens of the high peaks. Monsalo had ranged north and south along the high peaks and discovered the Birdhens moments before the orc horde arrived. A pitched battle ensued, the Birdhens defending themselves as best they might. Dropping rocks from above and knocking the orcs off cliffs. Their meager defenses would not have saved them, but for Monsalo and his soldiers. With sword and pike, they fell upon the orcs with savage fury. When the dust had settled, all of the orcs had perished falling, stabbed, or clawed.
The Birdhen leader, Whistlescreechsqauwk, was indebted to Monsalo for saving her people from certain extinction. She was especially grateful as her people had nothing to offer the human in recompense. Whistlescreechsqauwk knew that the only thing she had to offer was of herself. And so, after much preparation and ritual, The Grand Hen gave to Monsalo one of her own cherished feathers. It was imbued with magic that would preserve the feather indefinitely and was shaped at its tip into a writing implement.
Monsalo accepted the gift with great humility, vowing to ever hold the Birdhens in his heart. An outpost was constructed just below the nests in the high peaks and is still manned today, should the Birdhens ever need assistance again. The Quill was no common writing implement and was used only for royal decrees, proclamations, and writs. Monsalo found that he could not knowingly lie or write anything in the least bit evil while using the Quill. The Quill of the Birdhens is still used by the royals of Altrua today.
