The Xander
During the first Dark Ages, there was an adventuring team consisting of six individuals. One of those was a gnome by the name of Xander. Xander was a thief of exceptional ability. When he finally settled down at a ripe old age, he created an underworld society, a criminal organization that would be his legacy. Xander called the people in the organization his Ragtag Band, though in later days the group was known as The Mob by people outside of this secret society. When Xander knew the end was coming he arranged with his magician to instill his essence into a dagger. Whoever held this dagger was the leader of the Ragtag Band. In addition, the leader would have access to the knowledge that Xander possessed, for the dagger was now an intelligent item.
For more than 23,000 years Xander's Ragtag Band has persisted. The leader of the band is known as The Xander. This title has passed to halflings, human men and women, and even a dragon in human form at one point, though the Dagger prefers gnomes. This individual is at the top of the "pyramid" as Xander called it, an organizational setup that protected each layer above it. The bottom "stones" or cells only knew one individual in the layer above. This gave the entire structure a great deal of stability.
The Xander is responsible for keeping each member of the Ragtag Band happy, with gold in their pouch. The individual is also responsible for maintaining the great underground city deep beneath the foundations of Ilphelkirton. Managing the entire structure of the pyramid and increasing the base so that money flows up through the organization is also important. The Xander communes with the Dagger, feeding information to it and receiving instructions on various schemes to add gold to the coffers.
