The Pier Revue

The building on the stone pier of Jowvans harbour was orginally a lifeboat station. Following its partial destruction in the Great Storm of 5.901, a larger, lifeboat station was constructed further down the coast. The ruins of the old station were purchased by Zari and Iraj Momeni and repurposed into a theatre.   Rebuilt in the a neo-āpoq style and stained glass windows showing the traditional symbols of Helian performing arts, the Pier Revue accomodates 953 patrons, with 323 seats and standing room for 630. The seating area is elevated above the standing room, around the outer walls of the building. The stadning area is a wooden platform, raised above the stone base of the pier, and carpeted for comfort. A raised section around the outside allows patrons of different species to watch the performance comfortably. It was updated in 5.919 with a blue-and-white faïence frontage, that features a lion-mouth light-shrine housing no less than three ijugrumak, which provide lighting for the whole theatre.   Iraj Momeni is the current director and manager, and his sister Zari manages the day-to-day running of the Pier.   The Pier hosts a weekly compilation of sketches, songs, and dances which summarise and lampoon recent events, politics and politicians. A rotating cast of participants put on performances of 15-40 minutes apiece, with a new cast being announced every Saturday. A core cast of participants is supplemented by a series of new performers. As of 5.922, the headline acts feature one or more of:
  • Ali and Iraj Momeni, improv comedians
  • Mazyar Farzin, singer-songwriter
  • Kobra Taheri, traditional dancer
  • Elham Hedayati, traditional storyteller

Amenities

Helian laws require all theatre lighting to be provided by witchlight, and therefore the building is not wired for electricity or gas. After the revue, a dry bar provides refreshments outside the building, on the pier. In accordance with Helia's theatrical tradition, alcohol is not permitted on the premises.
