Ethan Marshal Walsh
Ethan Walsh is an Irish-born immigrant living and working in Boston, Massachusetts. He got a job as firefighter to combat his trauma of facing down German Kleinflammenwerfers in the trenches outside Passechendaele. He viewed fighting fires and rescuing people from burning blazes as a way to cope with the horrors he witnessed on the battlefield.
When the Great War ended, Ethan left his home in Ireland and moved to Boston in pursuit of a better life. Though he has always wanted to settle down and start a family of his own, he can't bring himself to connect with other people for fear of losing them. He deliberately distances himself from his coworkers, friends, and family for fear of losing them.
