Darkclaws

Basic Information

Anatomy

Darkclaws are a small dark dragon species living in coniferous forests and underground caves. They are entirely nocturnal and used to hibernate during the brighter months around 3000 years ago. In sunlight, darkclaws are physically weaker and their eyes can't adjust to sunlight making them incapable of surviving at day. They are agile and swift having padded 'paws' to stalk silently. They are also fond of hunting in packs of around 6. Since they are a smaller species they can fall prey to large theropods so they hunt smaller animals. Darkclaws have the best hearing of any species able to pick up much higher and lower frequencies and their asymmetrical hearing helps them accurately locate prey. They can also echolocate. Darkclaws have massive ears to pick up sound easily and have a row of scales from their snout tip. Their wings have an extra membrane and they have scales that light up in the dark.

Ecology and Habitats

They survive better in caves, underground and in dense forests. They used to live in the Sunpool mountain caves but after dragons kept disapprearing they moved underground.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They eat smaller woodland animals like elk.

Biological Cycle

Since they are noccturnal, they used to hibernate during bright months 3000 years ago. They stopped as it wasn't convenient for their economy and relations.

Behaviour

Darkclaws tend to be shy and withdrawn. They aren't fond of creating conflicts with other species but they used to be.

Nowadays, darkclaws are meek and peaceful and easily swayed by the opinions of other species. They are regarded as pathetic like airclaws and have a weak military.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

They celebrate the eclipses of the 5 moons and full moons. Legend has it they gain mysterious energy on full moons and act strangely.

Common Taboos

A couple dragons in their past tried to shift their sleep schedule in favour of being in sync with the other kingdoms but this failed miserably cause darkclaws can't function well in sunlight so mentioning changing the schedule is taboo.

History

Darkclaws first lived in caves in the mountains after they arrived on the island. Then after something kept making them disappear one by one they migrated to their forest where they built an enormous underground kingdom to live in along with a forest city. They were much more agressive and territorial due to being powered by anux magic before but after Shadetrail erasing the magic they became weaker.
