Szane Coręng (ʂanɛ tsɔrɛ̃)

Lord of the Army

Szane Coręng is the current leader of the Swan's Army in Rojgrasz. He would be a ruthless criminal in the Dark Lands, if there were justice and laws. Rumour has it he leads the army from Remnava's law-house.
He reorganized the army and weaved tighter relations with the Shadow Court, the most recent being an agreement to trade black salt.
Not much about him is known, but many legends envelop its person. For instance, many think he is an alńy, specifically Iskat, the legendary first grand runemaster.

Appearence

Only a few outside his immediate subordinates ever saw Szane and walked back alive to describe him. However, different descriptions of him circulated in the cities, sometimes with conflicting details.
Some claim he is a changeling demon, able to modify his appearance, either with spells or by his nature. The fact that descriptions don't even agree about his race corroborates this hypothesis. However, most people who support this idea tag it with the conclusion that he might be everywhere, observing everyone's move to find who opposes his reign of terror to act against them. The idea that the leader walks among ordinary people to look around seems insane to many, and the changeling hypothesis didn't catch on.
Most descriptions agree about the fact that Szane is a male. Some claim he is a Nojgraszian elf, others a human or avian. What seems sure is that he wears a mask over his eyes and nose, which resembles a bird's beak. It would be the visor of his helmet, an ornate black leather cap. Long sleek hairs fall from the helmet onto the feather mantle he wears on its shoulders. Again, people report different details about it, but most agree it is made of bird black feathers, possibly swans', which would make sense in the context of his role. As for the clothing, he wears an unremarkable grey robe with long large sleeves.
As for his figure, witnesses say he's of usual height and has pale skin.
According to some recounts, he owns a wooden rod that never leaves his hand.

Legends

Countless legends surround Szane. People think the Army acolytes spread most of them, possibly with Szane's permission or even by his command.
An interesting myth sees him as the first-ever grand runemaster, Iskat. It would mean he's been around for a millennium and a half. If this was true, and if he led the Army in the past, it would mean he has faked his death several times already to not arouse suspicions about his lifespan.
Another story links the army's general to the shadow crown, the Shadow Court's leader. According to this tale, the Shadow Court's real interest is in the Dark Lands, and the Swan's Army would be its detachment to find what they need. Since no one has ever seen the Crown and rumour has it they're in Nojgrasz the idea is consistent with the general understanding that Szane is in Remnava.
Some people even believe both these stories to be true. That would make Szane, Iskat and the Shadow Crown all the same incredibly powerful person.
Even though all of these stories are fascinating, most people do not believe in them. They think of Szane as a relatively ordinary, although mighty, alńy, who earned his role with his ruthlessness and adoration for the Dark Swan.

Leadership

Under Szane's lead, currently around twenty years, the Army grew considerably, both in size and influence. He made arrangements with the Shadow Court to allow imperial agents to roam the Dark Lands, and in exchange he got influential political allies and more manpower to achieve his unclear goals.
He efficiently reorganised the Army to welcome the new adepts and ensured the recruits had places known to be safe. In the chaos of the Dark Lands' competitive fight for survival, he successfully organised a society cooperatively working towards a goal, with less backstabbing than in the cities, at least for Nojgraszian standards.
Stories tell Szane sometimes personally keeps inspiring sermons to followers needing guidance. Many think his attitude showed a new way of living in the Dark Lands, still in a competition for the scarce resources, but in a way aligned with abyssal energies, amoral, obscure, possibly dangerous, but somewhat easier than the life of the average inhabitant. That would be the reason for his success.
