Water sickness is an illness rarely seen in the modern day of Oabos, but was a dangerous ailment for early humans. The rich Oas infused waters would slowly eat away at the souls of humans if not purified before drinking. The effects start slow, but compound drastically as the sick individual looses strength. If left untended, the water sickness can easily kill humans but it is a long and painful process.

History

In the early days of humanity on Oabos, there was only survival. The livestock brought on the grand expedition was dying even as the rations dwindled. In desperation, the remnants of the flagging human expedition made the decision to move from their somewhat protected camp in search of food and water. Crossing out of the charred landscape they had arrived in, the expedition moved into the foothills of a nearby mountain range.

Now that they had left the damaged area of their initial arrival they found life. Insects and small creatures for the hounds and birds to feed on. Long glowing grasses for the herds to survive off of. The expedition continued through the foothills until reaching a rushing mountain stream. There they established a new camp. What seemed like a safe refuge quickly showed it's own problems, however.

The the first weeks of the new camp, things seemed to be going fine. The livestock were able to feed and began to breed again, but the newborn animals entered the world sickly. They had malformed bodies or weakened constitutions. Very few survived more than a few days. Soon after, the humans began to see similar maladies. Not in newborn children, but in the otherwise healthy adults. Slowly they would loose strength and begin to fade as life their life were draining away.

Through much investigation it was determined that the water of the river was the cause of this wasting sickness, gaining it the simple name "water sickness". Anyone who regularly drank the water of the river would slowly begin to feel the effects of the water sickness. A few days of not drinking seemed to help the symptoms, but not having anything to drink posed additional problems. Particularly for those already weakened. Over time it was discovered that taking water from the river and flooding it with holy light would temporarily purify the water and make it safe for drinking. Unfortunately, this discovery was only able to save a little over half of the expedition force.
