Kraken

Krakens are colossal sea creatures that dwell within the deepest depths of seas in Eldorahn. Though rarely seen so close to the surface, krakens have been known to attack ships across the entirety of the ocean. Legends tell of krakens reaching sizes greater than those of the largest warships ever built. However, the largest krakens are known only to dwell within the deepest reaches of the sea and rarely come close to the surface and attack. Younger krakens have been known to frequent the surface level of the sea and occasionally attack. Krakens have few natural predators.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Krakens are massive eight-limbed cephalopods with two eyes and are large enough to match an entire ship if not surpass it in length. They are technically soft-bodied but are capable of incredible feats of strength, capable of crushing a full-grown man with ease. The largest are said to be able to crush entire ships with their tentacles. In rare times when a kraken is threatened, it can secrete a thick cloud of ink giving it time to escape.

Genetics and Reproduction

Krakens like many other cephalopods are known to hatch from eggs, laying up to almost 10,000 to 70,000 in total. The eggs are said to take up to five months if not twelve months to hatch. A female will guard them up to the moment they hatch constantly tending to them, she aerates them ensuring that they are clean. If left unattended she risks hundreds at a time dying. It is said that males after mating will become senescent and die shortly afterwards.

Ecology and Habitats

Very little is known about where krakens make their homes save that they live in the deepest and darkest reaches of every ocean. It is suspected that many different species have adapted to live in many different marine habitats. Smaller younger krakens are said to live closer to the surface until they reach their adult size making their way further and further into the deep.

Dietary Needs and Habits

All krakens are predators, eating massive crustaceans, smaller sea serpents, and even whales. On rare occasions, a kraken has been known to feed on massive schools of fish. In even rarer cases have krakens been said to feed on humans, attacking ships to feed on the crew.

Behaviour

Little is known about krakens, what is known is that adults are highly solitary while adolescents travel in very small numbers such as three to five at most.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Krakens like many cephalopods are highly intelligent, with practice they can recognize patterns and shapes with ease. This allows them to not just recognize prey animals but also recognize different ships at sea remembering which ones are equipped with weapons to defend against them.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

One of the most terrifying abilities that a kraken possesses is its ability to camouflage. When hunting and to avoid predators such as sperm whales, sea serpents, and leviathans it uses this ability to blend with its environment. To the surprise of many people do not know that krakens can only change into two or three different patterns at most giving them only a limited range of invisibility.
