The Catastrophe

The Catastrophe was far more than just a small event. Whatever they were doing at The Laboratories backfired, and the result of this backfire was a cataclysmic event that reshaped the world. At least, that's what the snippets of data we've been able to find says.
— Vresta, Datakeeper

I caused The Catastrophe. The Scientists at the Laboratories were creating a machine, fueled by an incredible ore found deep within The Mountains. This machine had the capacity to destroy the world, and humanities lust for violence would have done just that. I caused the first test run of it to backfire, releasing an explosion powerful enough to permanently effect the world. The results of this were an eternally turbulent sea that none can cross, and a new world. A world that I am protecting.
— Project 1, Singularity

Summary

The Catastrophe was a cataclysmic event caused by Project 1's attempt to stop humanity from destroying itself. The Scientists at the Laboratories were developing a reactor fueled by a mineral of incredible potential simply known as 291, named after the robot miner that discovered it. This mineral, if used in the right way, could be used to develop weapons of mass destruction and biological warfare even more potent than the Project 19 experiments. Because Project 1 saw this potential, they decided something must be done. Project 1 set the defaults of the reactor to a heat almost triple what it was supposed to be, and disabled the cooling mechanism. This resulted in a chain reaction through the reactor, and it exploded. The resulting explosion decimated the tectonic plates around the continent, and the continent itself. The release of energy made an eternally turbulent sea with eternal storms surrounding it; moved mountains, hills, and lakes; and completely decimated most of the life on the continent. Very few species survived this, and those that did began becoming effected by the experiments now released from the labs, and the radiation permeating the landscape. Ten thousand years later, some semblances of societies have evolved as intelligent species have began to rise again. Project 1 survived, and is, in his mind, looking over the now "restored" world, keeping it in an era of darkness while purging any research notes or technology that could be dangerous it can find.

Historical Basis

The Catastrophe did happen, and there are logs to back this up.
The reactor is getting too hot, and we can't manually override it. Something is blocking us, we don't know what. If this thing explodes, it could destroy everything. If someone is reading this, know that we messed up, and the result is our fault.
— A Scientist within the Laboratories

Project 1 has overridden everything, simply telling us "our time has come". I believe it intends to kill us all. I write this now, so future peoples will know what has happened here, and that we did not mean for this to happen. To them, I apologize.
— Richard, Head Researcher for Project 18

Spread

The legend of The Catastrophe is known all across Obscur, as it is sort of their religion.
Ah yes, the tale of The Catastrophe. A long time ago, when the world was just an empty slate, our savior, Singularity, created a massive explosion that made everything we know here. Our goal is to be reunited with Singularity, and fulfill the cycle of Life. Conception, Living, Death.

Really great read! I feel the consistent style of your world: Just dark enough to be horrifying, but light enough to have a hot-blooded adventure. So, what was Singularity's pre-programmed goal, so that it found the destruction of most of the planet as the best solution?

The release of energy made an eternally turbulent sea with eternal storms surrounding it, moved mountains; hills; and lakes, and completely decimated most of the life on the continent.
I'd swap the commas and semicolons in this sentence. Feels more like the natural order.

Singularity's pre-programmed goal was to help humanity advance. Through its AI being able to learn and it effectively being human, it decided that the best way to help humanity advance was to eliminate them. It saw humanity as the greatest threat to its own advancement, and it removed the problem. Most of that will be covered when I get around to finishing Singularity's article, ty for the questions and suggestions!
