Personal history

Malleus was born to Dante, a farmer living in the southern town of Aravel. His mother Chivaya, a lake naiad from the surrounding forests gave birth to him and his sister on a horribly stormy night in the warm waters of her favorite pond. The thunder roared and ripped the sky in two, but the siblings were born safe and healthy, defying the raging storm around them.
Malleus grew up on his father's small farm, helping him by taking care of the animals and collecting herbs in the woods. He and his father sometimes visited his mother in forest, bringing her fresh berries to eat as a gift.
Chivaya was always so happy to see her son, and though she wasn't content living so far away from Dante, it couldn't be helped. Several years passed, and with them came a famine. All sources of water dried up, taking the fish with them. The forest creatures ran when their sources of food and drink disappeared, and all that was left was a few berries in the woods.
On one particularly rough day, a traveler arrived into the village. He shared some of his foods and questioned the villagers, wondering why they were so glum. Upon hearing of their predicament he swore to help and was promised a great reward should he succeed. The man went into the woods and ran into Chivaya by accident. He deduced that this magical water being must be what's causing the lakes to dry and the fish to be found rotten and dead on the shores. That night, he helped form a mob, which Dante wasn't fast enough to follow. By the time he reached the pond, Chivaya was dead, pinned to a tree with two pitch forks, her throat ripped open with a dagger that lay abandoned on the ground next to her.
Dante wept for days, and swore to find the stranger one day. By this time Malleus was 15, a strapping young elf, sure of himself and ready to conquer the world. He was confused when his father came from the forest, bloody and furious, clutching a foreign weapon in his hand. Dante told him and Mallory what had happened and forbade them from coming with him.
Instead, both enrolled in the Dievant University of Magic and Healing Arts. The twins studied earnestly, and ended up the top of their classes quickly. This elicited some jealousy from their peers, but none dared to hurt one, should the anger of the other come upon them.
During his time in the university, Malleus learned much. Not just from the arts that were taught, but also about the forbidden. He threw himself into research about necromancy, hoping that maybe one day he could bring his mother back to life. On one late night he shared his plans with Mallory, who found him asleep over a dark tome. She was wary, doubting that anything already dead could truly be brought back into this world, but she didn't stop her brother.
During their studies, they didn't make many friends, due to the dedication to schoolwork and preparation for life after graduation. Five years later, they were both academics and experts, Malleus on herbalism and Mallory on divination. They even wrote a book together about natural remedies found just by the corner of one's household. After leaving the school, not having anywhere to go back to, they decided to travel. Their father was still away, and they very well might run into him, or the man responsible for their mother's death.
Two years they spent on the road, sleeping beneath pine branches and the occasional inn, offering healing services to the villages they came by. Eventually they came north, to the border between Mittelteil and Velkheim, and decided to settle into the bustling city of Halpern.
They settled into a small nook of the marketplace, eventually saving up for their own shop, which they now live in together, waiting for news of their father, or the mysterious murderer.
