Ferrodium
"Forged in the firey bowls of rapture 7, this alloy is stronger than any other known to man!" Vendor at Arms and Materiels Show
Properties
Material Characteristics
The alloy is colored with a slightly blue tint. It reflects light well giving it a sheen that makes it appear to have a off blue glow.
Physical & Chemical Properties
The alloy is made of iron, cobalt, and a third unidentified mineral. It is stronger than any other materiel known to man, and is a perfect insulator, making it a great tool to deflect energy weapons.
Compounds
Unknown.
Geology & Geography
The material is made in the core of Rapture 7, and is then expelled to the surface through its many volcanoes.
Origin & Source
The ore that contains this metal is known as ferrodite, and is made up of ferrodium and large amounts of palladium and thorium.
History & Usage
History
The alloy was discovered by settlers on rapture 5 prospecting rapture 7. After its discovery, the planet was purchased by the Orion arms company.
Discovery
It was discovered by a group of prospectors.
Everyday use
It is used in high quality armor for ships, vehicles, and infantry.
Cultural Significance and Usage
It is thought to be a divine material for the elementist church, and is used as a materiel for sacred items.
Industrial Use
Before used as armor, a subcontractor of Orion arms, Stone nanotechnologies, implants creates vast sheets of the alloy micrometers thick. It is then implanted with carbon nanotubes, heated to 270,000 degrees, then bent into the desired shape. It is then implanted electricity to the desired surface, or melted and cast for the desired shape.
Refinement
The pure ore of ferrodium, known as ferrodite, is 70% thorium, 25% palladium, and 5% ferrodium. The other minerals are sold for a profit, after being melted off of the pure ferrodium.
Manufacturing & Products
It is used in ship armor, manufacturing tools, implanted in glass to make it glow, cast to build infantry suits, and used in high quality melee weapons.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
The thorium and palladium from ferrodite is sold separately. Small amount of pure ferrodium are used in quantum computers to herd electrons.
Hazards
It can be toxic to ingest large amounts of the material, and refiners can get radiation poisoning if they are not careful handling the ore.
Environmental Impact
No negative environmental effects have been reported.
Reusability & Recycling
The materiel is 100% reusable, it simply needs to be re cast to fit a new shape.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Orion arms holds a monopoly on the extraction of the ore, but through contracts to subsidiaries and theft some end up on the open market. The refined alloy is a highly sought after item and is quickly snatched up by governments and the wealthy
Storage
The alloy is stored in highly guarded facilities on planets in the Rapture system, as it is remote and its inhabitants are few.
Law & Regulation
The Noctran kingdom does not allow the sale of the alloy to private citizens, however, exceptions are made for the king's favorites.
Value
20,000 credits per gram
Rarity
Only found on Rapture 7 and synthesized in small quantities in Orion Arms Labs
Color
Turquoise
Melting / Freezing Point
