Gwenaria's Rebellion

The rebellion started behind closed doors among some of the noble houses. They plotted to assassinate Gwenaria before her coronation. Their design was to put one of themselves on the throne. A footman in one of the houses overheard the discussions and spread the word to the common people. The commoners circulated it to the tradesmen and gatherings were held to devise ways of hindering and stopping the nobles from subverting the rightful succession. While it never came to fighting in the streets, property was damaged and destroyed, servants sacked, and plans sabotaged. While the largest main conflict occurred in the capital, Tirfalon, there were smaller uprisings on many noble estates and smaller cities.

After the dust settled, many nobles were either dead or ruined. Others rose to take their places, either by appointment or succession. The tradesmen and common people gained voices in government. There was a fair bit of cleaning up to do, both governmentally and physically. Some property switched hands and buildings and businesses had to be rebuilt.

Aftermath

Peace in the kingdom insued, though remnants of the old guard can be found here and there. They are careful not to speak very loudly for fear of reprisals.

Historical Significance

In 1959 AG, after the death of Queen Gwenaria's father, King Daricus Silverstave, the nobles tried to assassinate Queen Gwenaria because they were against a woman ruling. There had always been a king in Octiragrin up to that point. The tradesmen and commoners, on the other hand, were in favor of Gwenaria. A bloody rebellion took place and there were many assassinations of the nobility, and killing and burning of property on both sides. While Gwenaria was saddened by the violence, she saw the necessity and remained committed to ruling. It was her father's wish that she rule after him. He had attempted to ease the people into the idea by having her sit in and advise on all the meetings and state functions for several years before his death, but it did not affect the narrow-minded views of some of the nobles.
