Mockingfey
The Mockingfey is a fey creature found primarily in the Realm Everlasting. When encountering a mortal traveler in their realm, they imprint on them, adopting the travelers' physical features over time until they become a diminutive version of their 'host.' If circumstances where they imprint on multiple individuals at once, they transform into a peculiar hybrid, merging the characteristics of their different hosts.
They are playful although somewhat disturbing for their hosts and their allies.
While they do not possess the capacity for intelligent speech, they are able to piece together short sentences based on sounds or words they have recently heard.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The true form of the Mockingfey is that of a passerine bird. Approximately 10 inches long, the Mockingfey is often mistaken at a distance as a typical Odanian bird. However, even without a recent host, the Mockingfey has a strangely humanoid face, although relatively bland and inconspicuous.
As the Mockingfey adopts a new form, it's physiology actually changes, wings becoming arms, feathers becoming skin, etc.
Genetics and Reproduction
Mockingfey lay only one egg in their lifetime. The luminescent egg is laid in the heart of a nest hidden within the Realm Everlasting, typically built along the River Gleaming.
Both parents take turns incubating the egg, although the rhyme or reason to this exchange remains somewhat of a mystery.
When the Mockingfey hatches, their faces are blank featureless expanses. They soon begin to adopt the characteristics of both parents as they begin to practice their mimicry skills.
Growth Rate & Stages
The Mockingfey egg takes 33 days to hatch, and the adoption of a face of the young chick takes approximately 66 days. 99 days after hatching, the juvenile Mockingfey leaves the family unit forever and begins their own life in the woods of the Everlasting.
The Mockingfey is immortal, and dies only due to violence, accident, or strangely, heartbreak.
Ecology and Habitats
The Mockingfey is found all across the Realm Everlasting, but tends to gather along waterways, or near other sapient settlements.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Mockingfey have an unfailing memory for faces and can recognize and remember people whom they fey have seen even only once.
Besides this characteristic, it is assumed that the Mockingfey has perceptive abilities in line with other similar species of birds.
