Mel

Mel is a city-state located on the east coast of Pallar, the northernmost island of the Frozen Isles. The city is the largest of the island and the fifth largest of the Frozen Isles. With a whopping two thousand inhabitants, it is more than twice as large as the city of Barra, the second largest city of Pallar, which counts eight hundred inhabitants.

Ancient Settlement

The island of Pallar knows only a handful of umbar trees, some of which are permanently partially covered by snow and ice. However, malevolent creature appearances are irregular and less common than in other parts of the Frozen Isles, and many clans have not settled near an umbar. Mel is an extraordinary example of a relatively large ancient settlement without an umbar tree. It especially grew in size after the disovery of alternative protection against malevolent creatures.
Mel is a coastal city in a region known as Farnor, which is a region largely snow and ice free in the warm seasons and stretches relatively far inland compared to other regions in Pallar. While the temperatures in warm seasons are still too low for trees to grow, nice tundra shrubbery makes the area rather pleasant to live in. Because of this pleasant warm season, Farnor was one of the first regions to be permanently inhabited by Pallarians.
The specific location of Mel on the coast is both a great place for fishing, near a seal hunting place and a great connection to the islands on the other side of the Northern Sea. Mel has a beautiful harbour with a large drydock shipyard where boats are stored during the cold season when the sea is frozen over.

Research of the Unknown

In the past three decades, Mel has doubled in size. In this age of discovery and inventions, the interest in the frozen north has exploded. Mel is now home to three science and exploration facilities. The main interests are in mapping the Pallar Icy Fields and the wonders it holds in relation to magic and mystical beasts, what wonders lie north beyond the Icy Fields, and the irregularity of malcrea appearances.
