Spectral Guardians

Long ago, when the Blighted Woods was a realm of thriving life rather than twisted decay, a group of dragonettes soared through the moonlit skies. These were not the fearsome dragons of lore but delicate, ethereal beings with scales that shimmered like the moon's reflection on a still pond.   As the malevolence slowly crept into the woods, some of these dragonettes were caught in the clutches of the gathering darkness. Unable to escape, their forms shifted, becoming creatures of the shadows themselves. No longer bound by the laws of the living, they turned into spectral dragonettes, their wings now translucent like the veils between the worlds.   It is said that these dragonettes, though touched by the malevolence of the Blighted Woods, retained the gentle souls of their former selves. Instead of causing harm, they became guardians of the forgotten, guiding lost spirits to the afterlife. Their haunting cries echoed through the twisted trees, a melody that brought solace to the tormented souls that wandered the cursed realm.   As the tale goes, a lone wanderer once found themselves lost in the heart of the Blighted Woods. The air was thick with an otherworldly stillness, and the twisted trees seemed to whisper secrets of forgotten realms. Fear gripped the wanderer's heart until the spectral dragonettes emerged through the opaque mist.   With wings like gossamer and eyes that held the ancient wisdom of the forest, the dragonettes encircled the lost soul. Instead of fear, a strange calm washed over the wanderer. The spectral beings, gentle as the night breeze, guided the wanderer through the labyrinthine paths of the cursed woodland.   As dawn approached, casting its feeble light through the twisted branches, the spectral dragonettes faded like morning mist. The wanderer found themselves at the edge of the Blighted Woods, the boundary between the malevolent darkness and the world beyond.   From that day forth, the wanderer spoke of the spectral dragonettes, of their benevolence in the heart of malevolence. The tale spread through villages and hamlets on the outskirts of the Blighted Woods, becoming a folk story that mothers told their children as a cautionary yet comforting tale.   However, the elders warned that one must never attempt to capture or harm these spectral beings, for they were not to be trifled with. Those who disrespected the silent agreement with the dragonettes were lost in the perpetual gloom, never to be seen again.
