The Skulk
This ceremony in particular is a huge affair for the Shadow Riders Guild.
At the beginning of the ceremony, all the Shadow Squire gather outside of the den of the Panther Territories. A special uniform is worn during the ceremony, in all black, in attempt to soften the startling reaction some of the younger panthers have to certain colours. Due to it's importance, the rest of the guild and guest gather outside the area, in the reinforced "viewing house" stands to watch the proceedings. Out side of the viewing house it is expected for the Shade Master to be present to assist should there be any issues. On the rare occasion the Grandmane will attend outside of the viewing house as well.
Phase Panthers have been known to gather nearby for the ceremony as well, drawn to the emerging of the panthers. Unlike natural panthers, Phase Panthers do gather in close nit groups. As such the emergence of new kittens is incredibly important. Those Shadow Squire who lack the proper decorum or are impatient for kittens have been met with the anger of the grown Phase Panthers that lie in wait in the dense foliage. A low base like rumble is known to be present at the emerging of the kittens, something that is very certainly more abyssal than natural.
Those who are untrained in the ways of Phase Panthers may have heard this sound as well when something draws the attention of the Abyssal Cats. Curious creatures, the sound is often an enthusiastic hunting sound when done outside of the context of the Skulk.
Once the kittens emerge they conduct what is known as the choosing. The newly born panthers will feel a connection to those in attendance and choose from the selection of attendants before them. Not all attendants are chosen however, and some do attend multiple ceremonies. There is never a guarantee of a connection with a panther, as always it is the choice of the panther and not the potential rider who best they will pair with. No one is quite sure how a panther knows who is best suited for their partnership, but their keen instinct in this regard is infallible. Those with keen instincts and a predators air are often favoured for choosing, but this is not always the case.
There have been instances where older attendants who have been passed over multiple times will plead to the panthers. These pleas are never answered and often lead to a lesson in claw or tooth. Though some attendants have been killed for this arrogance, more often than not the kittens will ignore these individuals, the adult panthers are less forgiving.
The skulk ceremony is be followed by a hardy meal for all in attendance in celebration for the new bonds being forged.
