Foldspace Engine
Utility
FSE are used primarily by the Explorer's Union who still brave the unknown parts of the Universe and the Iron Order who never developed a phobia of thinking machines. One can find them on massive industrial starships moving resources and people into Deep Space where other parties cannot.
Social Impact
The FSE lead to an explosion in space exploration and colonization within Midgard and beyond as they could also be sued to traverse Yggdrasil itself.
Access & Availability
Foldpsace Engines were once extremely common on all Starships before the Haljordian Dirka'Ad, when the Machine Mastermind, Haljordian-0091, nearly wiped out all biological life in Midgard. Since then, a strict ban on high-level AI has been in place. But since high-level AI are needed as Navigators for Foldpsace Engines, Midgard saw the tech fall out os popularity. Any ships that predate the Haljordian Dirka'Ad are few and far between.
Complexity
Foldspace Engines are extremely complex machines, as bending the very fabric of reality is no easy feat. The hardest aspect of the Engine to come by, other than the innards, is a Navigator, an AI that can handle the complex and lengthy calculations needed to travel at FTL. However, since the Haljordian Dirka'Ad, such machine minds are harder to come by, with most settling for a Construct, an imitation of an AI that lacks higher-level thought and, as a result, processes a lot slower than an AI.
