Proof of Affiliation
The periodic unrest that has beset Ankaluun for millenia has necessitated a way for the various governmental authorities to confirm one's geopolitical allegiances. The Proof, as it is known, is the answer to this need and has been adopted across the continent.
Purpose
While The Brand is considered the primary indicator to which empire or free-city one belongs, it not always considerd absolute proof of fact. The Proof is a set of papers that indicate a person's geopolitical affiliation and is used to validate the information that appears on the neck of those from Ankaluun. Despite the fact that both tattoos and papers may be forged, it is generally accepted that having Proof which validates the Brand is as close as the authorities may get to confirmation of citizenship.
The Proof may only be obtained from governmental authorities in a city within the empires or one of the free cities who belong to the Freeland Cooperative Government. It is generally issued to a person shortly after birth and each government has slightly different laws but generally a person must receive their proof before the next census of the empire or region.
Over the years, The Muddled Brand has been at the forefront of efforts to counterfeit these documents but has had far less success than their work on the tattoos that are pervasive on the necks of those in Ankaluun. In most cases, the governments seem to be one step of the forgers and make use of many arcane tricks to ensure the documents are difficult to recreate.
