Iron Silk Material in Omari | World Anvil

Iron Silk

This thread is quite useful for various crafting. Good luck trying to harvest it though. You're better off shelling out the high coin for some.
This metallic thread is produced by a unique species of silkworm found within the Crimson Depths. No other species produces the silk nor have scientists discovered how to reproduce it. It's a relatively new material that has yet to be fully understood.

Properties

The thread is thin yet strong with a dark silver color. It's resistant to both rust an fire. The material becomes stronger when woven into cloth / other garments. It doesn't have any inherent magical properties, but takes on enchantments without issue.   More research discovered that it's not a metal coated silk. This thread is 100% metal. It needs careful handling as it can cut through soft surfaces. Scientists continue to study the silk in hopes of learning more about it.

Production

Iron silk is a product of the natural digestive cycle of the worm species. They feed on the metal rich rocks and soil of their environment. Their bodies don't digest the metal in full, but utilize it to create sturdy, safe cocoons and canopies to keep them above the ground from predators.   The worms are a protected species that don't fare well in captivity. Despite man made threads / wires already existing, researchers still want to study the silk in full. It has a unique composition compared to them and takes less energy to enchant. Scientists believe there may be more useful properties that other wires can't provide.   To date there is only one small research lab authorized to work with the worms. They seek to breed a line that can thrive in a farm environment to produce higher quantities for commercial use. There are a handful of individuals with permits to acquire the thread from its natural source. Otherwise, it' illegal for most people to do so.

Great article! Iron silk has so many unique uses. I especially picture spellcasters being able to wear iron silk robes - protection without armor incumbrance.
