Screaming Labyrinth
I've heard the local legends, but I never thought the sound produced would be so...utterly disturbing. Normally nighttime sounds don't bother me, but I had to wear ear plugs that night for any hope of sleep.
This small island is located in the Shimmering Bay on the Eastern island of Neofai. The closest settlement is the resort town of Andrada. No one lives there and many do their best to avoid sailing or flying too close.
Appearance and Structure
Despite its title, this location is a singular island first and foremost. No one's given it an official name and locals simply refer to it by the scary structure it contains. It's tall and square with jagged, hard to traverse, rocky cliff walls. There is a thin strip of beach around its base; it's composed of dark grey sand and sharp rocks that will damage unprotected feet.
Although it is connected to the tectonic plate, this chunk of land was not part of the island development when the gods created the new islands. It appeared seemingly overnight, waking light sleepers with a wailing sound that lasted well into the morning. Superstitious folk believe the screaming is that of lost, tortured souls trapped on the island. Scientists believe it's caused by high winds traveling through the large maze structure that was carved into the top of the island. These winding paths are hard to access, but can be viewed with an areal perspective.
The Labyrinth
Sitting atop the island is the maze itself. It stretches over 80% of the surface, leaving narrow exploration room outside its walls. An unknown group of people formed it via carving straight into the stone top of the island. No one knows what it looked like before this and can only guess. There is an entryway on both the North and South wall of the labyrinth. It has yet to be fully explored due to both fear and navigation difficulty. Historians are considering sending renowned traveler, Birki Kroon, in to chart the whole maze.
Plot Hooks
A mysterious beam of green light appears from the center of the island one night and locals are concerned about what it may mean.
The party is tasked with collecting sand and rock samples from the beach for a local scientist who is willing to pay.
I adore the idea of just a random labyrinth island that nobody has been able to map. This would be very interesting for an adventure, indeed.
