Empire of Evermore
The Empire of Evermore is the organization that lays claim to the largest landmass of all the nations in the mainland continent - about the south half. Heavily militarized and riddled with troubles, criminal and diplomatic alike, only the strong and willing thrive here.
Introductory paragraph of the book 'Evermore: Empire of Conquest', by Hum'ro Skadi, as published in 2355 AFL.
Beginning with a single city and surrounding villages, the empire - at the time led by a powerful military leader who led by example and insisted on being called simply by no titles, only the name Tempest, the country spread its influence quickly. Their first conquest, the kingdom of Nebel to the west, was a long and bloody war that ended in the annexation of that country into the empire. A court was established to contend with the satisfaction of the conquered nobles and to form a true body of government.
Evermorian folk motto
In the next two hundred or so years, long after the death of its founding father, the empire continued to expand north. First, into the country formerly known as Fomoria, the capital of which is the city known today as Madain Nym. The fomori put up a valiant defence effort, and the empire hatched a genocidal plan that laid waste to the lush forests that surrounded Madain Nym, as well as all settlements, villages and other gatherings that lay in a large radius around the Baile I Bhfolach. After the magical devastation began, killing hundreds of thousands of sentient and non-sentient creatures alike, the fomori settled for a truce that would end with their joining of the empire. The damage was done, however, as the sheer destruction and dark nature of the spells utilized transformed not only the surrounding areas but even the lands untouched, turning them into a swamp and burying most traces of the ancient Fomorian civilization under water and rot.
The empire's last great conquest, just a few decades after, was almost a silent affair by comparison. Having heard of the devastation inflicted upon the fomori, the previously great Empire of Jimmu had long feared that the evermorians would somehow cross the Devourer's Domain and threaten their jewel city with similar devastation. When the first evermorian envoys arrived to make contact with government officials in Shin-Kurvast, they were greeted immediately with terms of Jimmu's surrender. Thus they were mostly unharmed and allowed to continue existing mostly independently, becoming subjects only in terms of trade and sharing of knowledge.
In the following centuries, multiple descendants of the Tempest put in place plans to conquer the lands north of the Wall of Svadilfari, but were thwarted by the superior tactics and technology of their neighbour, Lindblum, as well as the wall itself. A treaty was made and the two lands have been at peace ever since.
Bruska still acts as Evermore's capital, the court of which holds representatives from all corners of the empire. An uneasy peace exists between all territories, held in a vice grip by the emperor and his army.
"Evermore. Even the name commands authority and permanence, wouldn't you say so, dear reader? This book is dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge about the many lands under the yoke of a once small country that took control of most of the southern half of the mainland continent. The stories behind each piece of land, before and after their conquest by the many emperors that managed to bring so many under their rule. Its people, landmarks and all manner of oddities. As of the writing of this book, the empire proper has been around for roughly two thousand years. I say roughly because the date of founding has been heavily discussed among scholars who claim that some act or other to be the 'founding event', so to speak. Regardless of these events, however, it is a matter of historical record that the empire started as just one city and its adjacent terrain - Bruska."
