L'Errants

A humble race of wandering turtle-people which only recently manifested from beneath the waters of Amsvartnir.
"The author, as you know, has dedicated himself to the act of cataloging every sentient race in Gaia. The one that almost eluded me (and which some would say is a great coincidence due to their presence in eastern Lindblum, like the Prenggo) is this species which can best be explained as reptiles bound in powerful shells which they carry with themselves for life. I've only met a single specimen, a merchant who introduced himself to me as Gron, whose delightful presence I will never forget. This humble man regaled me with tales of his homeland which I would be foolish not recount to all who wish to hear.   Indeed, his species is a most ancient one, but they have chosen to hide themselves from world at large due to an unwillingness to meddle in the affairs of others. One should not assume these people are less advanced due to their withdrawal from our larger world, however, as the technology this man peddled seemed to me like something originated from Lindblum - or even more, from Chroma. They are excellent craftsmen, indeed. I only wish I could visit them 'neath the depths of Armsvartnir!"

  • A small excerpt from the book 'Intelligent Life in Gaia', by Hum'ro Skadi, as published in 2335 AFL.

  •   It is said that this species of humanoids lived in harmony with humes and other species on firm ground, several millennia ago. After a great many wars between the other races, the L'Errants chose to hide from the world, electing a simpler life underwater. Many of their kin longed for adventure and interaction with other races, and so a few ventured out from under the watchful gaze of the Jötunnwillow, but rarely have they made their presences widely known; instead, choosing to act as simple merchants and martial artists. Recently, a growing concern over a malevolent force threatening Gaia has spurred some of these brave people on to venture outside once more and seek to conquer that which seeks to erase all they hold dear - which is to say, the whole world.

Ability Score Increase +2 Strength, +1 Wisdom
    Size Medium
    Speed 30ft

(This species is a lore-appropriate transcription of the Tortle race from Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. The stats listed here are for ease of access, but aren't heavily modified from the original material.)

    Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

    Age

Young l'errants crawl for a few weeks after birth before learning to walk on two legs. They reach adulthood by the age of 15 and live an average of 150 years.

    Size

Tortle adults stand 5 to 6 feet tall and average 450 pounds. Their shells account for roughly one-third of their weight. Your size is Medium.

    Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

    Claws

Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

    Water Breathing

You can hold your breath underwater indefinitely and have swimming speed equal to your walking speed.

    Natural Armor

Due to your shell and the shape of your body, you are ill-suited to wearing armour. Your shell provides ample protection, however; it gives you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect this number). You gain no benefit from wearing armour, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield’s bonus as normal.

    Shell Defense

You can withdraw into your shell as an action. Until you emerge, you gain a +4 bonus to AC, and you have advantage on Strength and Constitution saving throws. While in your shell, you are prone, your speed is 0 and can’t increase, you have disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws, you can’t take reactions, and the only action you can take is a bonus action to emerge from your shell.

    Survival Instinct

You gain proficiency in the Survival skill. L'Errants have finely honed survival instincts.
