Lady of the Coin

A Lady of the Coin, otherwise known as a Hidden Matriarch, are the meanding ancestors of the Noble Houses. Typically, only the current Martriarch, Elders, and talented members of a clan are privy to their identity and whereabouts.

Origins

Although the Universe of Atlia acts as the 2nd most important chessboard of the Higher Beings in the omniverse, it's inhabitants are usually clueless of what's outside Atlia except for a few information brought by Aia the Naiad, Aseyar the Disgrace of House Scarce, and Cassandra the Wanderer.   One of this few exceptions is the existence of the Goddess of the Moon and the Lady of the Coin.   When Cassandra the Wanderer warned Ezra about the existence of the Broken Order of the Gray Fire, she also told him about the creator of the Order, the Goddess of the Moon and the Lady of the Coin.   Ezra's unsuccessful attempt to implode his soul to fulfill his goal of universal enlightenment lead to the knowledge of Goddess of the Moon and the Lady of the Coin's existence being dissiminated to some Atlians.

Evolution of it's Usage

The first records of the title being used was when the first Chief Lich, Echo Tharqaq, bestowed the title to the then Councilwoman, Mistress Fairabeth. As a Lady of the Coin, Mistress Fairabeth acted as the guardian of Usan'taar's artificacts and treasure, strategist and general of the Ebony Fleet, and right hand of the Chief Lich, even going as far as to decide on his behalf when he's not available.   After Echo Tharqaq's temporary death in the War of the Venerables, Mistress Fairabeth was dismissed by the new Chief Lich in fear of the former Chief's lingering influence.    Three years after Mistress Fairabeth's dismissal and later banishment, Ellena Stostuq would replace her as the Lady of the Coin under Dyla Cosgyd.   With the mysterious assasination of Dyla Cosgyd, Ellena Stostuq will desert her post in Void Plateau leading to the War of Blazing Crows.   The War of Blazing Crows will result into the return of Echo Tharqaq and to Pamela Quinn filling the position of Lady of the Coin, albeit with the reduced responsibility and in turn, power of only being Usan'taar's Treasury Guardian.   Six years after Pamela Quinn's apointment, she will step down from her responsibility stating,

"I've served my people well. It's time to serve my own blood next."

This was of course planned to coincide with Mistress Fairabeth's return to Usan'taar and to power as she once again assumed the title and role of Lady of the Coin, but this time, renamed as Bearer of the Liches' Woes or simply the Bearer.   The change in Mistress Fairabeth's title meant that the title Lady of the Coin bears less impact in discussions and the people's heart. Along with the Lady of the Coin now stuck to Pamela Quinn's name, the Lady of the Coin and it's rarer variant, Lord of the Coin, became popular amongst the young Liches that wants to establish themselves and their own clans.   Although the usage of the title was popular among the commoners, only the Ladies of the Coin from the 5 Lich Houses are officially granted. One granted by former Chief Lich Echo Tharqaq and four by De facto Leader Fairabeth I.

Inheriting the Title

Throughout the long history of the title and its bearers being the most infuential women in Atlia, only once was there a succession of the title.   When Mistress Fairabeth I decided to watchover the universe alongside Archregina Gail Nidhogg instead of meddling with the events of Atlia, she bestowed her title to the now Lich Queen and Royal Martriarch, Mother Fairabeth II.
