The Variant War begins with the Azazi Empire begins using Essie warfare in attempt to assassinate other world leaders. They are defeated by a independent coalition of Essies after just 4 months.

The Azazi Empire uses an Essie with deadly abilities to assassinate the president of the PVF, Angus Drell. War is immediately declared.    It is discovered that the Azazi Empire has been training supersoldier Essies to fight in an elite killing unit.   Outraged at the misuse of their abilities, Essies around the world band together to form their own freedom force, with the goal of defeating the Empire and freeing the other Essies in their "war training camps."   At the conclusion of the war, the group of Essies formed the Gaian Protectors.
