Friendly and peaceful, the halflings are small creatures that prefer the rural lifestyle. They have a love of food and good company.
Escaping Notice
Halflings have a habit of keeping to themselves in small communities. They are at home in plains and hills, where they can live simple lives tending to their own gardens and developing close relationships with others of their kind. Their homes are small and usually well hidden, often built right into the hills to help them hide from prying eyes. Don't let their discretion fool you, however, as halflings absolutely love to meet new and interesting creatures. Halflings have a knack for the culinary and will absolutely insist upon sharing their delicacies with anyone they meet. A hearty meal in a halfling house is the envy of many adventurers if they can deal with the low ceilings
Halflings have managed to stay out of the affairs of the other species. Their communal nature never led them towards nation-building. The desire to rule over large swaths of land is foreign to them. Why lord over more than they could ever possibly need? They also dislike the fighting that usually precedes and follows the building of kingdoms. They prefer to settle their beefs on the bar-b-que, likely with a side of ringlet potato salad and willow wheat stew.
A Good Tale
Halflings love a good story almost as much as a good stew. Many halflings are enticed into the adventuring life after being regaled with stories of glory and treasure by adventurers they invite into their communities for a night of rest. Though not greedy people, they believe all treasures come with stories to tell, whether of its origin or its acquisition. Treasures make natural conversation pieces, and many halfling adventurers join the lifestyle to fill their homes with plenty of topics to talk about.
Their love of food and stories has also enticed some halflings to leave their rural communities for busier towns and cities. In the hustle and bustle, they blend in well and can feed their appetites among the taverns and markets. Savy tavern owners capitalize on their desires and skills, hiring them as chefs and barkeeps. It's also not uncommon to find halflings employed anywhere that allows them to hear great tales of adventure, such as in shops that cater to adventurers and sellswords.
Though different in many ways, city folk have often mistaken halflings for gnomes. This is a surefire way to get a rise out of the typically peaceful halflings. They do not despise gnomes, not by any means, but feel it especially insulting to mistaken for a gnome. They will often lash back about the obvious differences in the size of their eyes and heads and the clear difference in their personalities. Those with large, hairy feet (a trait not common to all halflings) will bemoan this difference as well, citing that the offender couldn't possibly have missed their lack of dainty little shoes.
