Imp

An imp is the smallest, lowest-ranking Devil.
Imps have almost no innate power of their own. Every devil outranks them, and any devil can easily wrest control over them. However, because of their tiny size, they have the easiest time escaping into the Material Plane from the Lower Planes. Sometimes even a minor immoral act by a Warlock or other fiend-indebted mortal creates enough of a pinprick in the moral fabric of the universe for an imp to slip through.

Genetics and Reproduction

Imps lay eggs in the blood sea of Avernus and in the River Styx, which hatch into tadpole-like larvae. When power ebbs into the devils' lands compared to the rest of the universe, these larvae can evolve into full-fledged imps.
Imps also have an innate connection with rats, flies, and beetles. When on the Material Plane, they can transform into these creatures and mate with them. When this happens, both their mates and their offspring become imps as well.

Behaviour

Imps in the Lower Planes are primarily solitary creatures, since nearly everything there can easily capture them, betray them, or enslave them. On the Material Plane, imps become much more social, seeking out other imps wherever they can. A bale of imps can vary from two or three to several dozen. When the bale increases enough in size, they can rend a larger rift into the Material Plane and pull through a superior devil, like a Rakshasa or a Fuccubus. In exchange for this favor, these devils offer a measure of protection to the imps who agree to serve them.
